Geoff Raw, Executive Director Environment, Development & Housing; Brighton & Hove City CouncilGeoff Raw Resized

Currently Executive Director of Environment, Development & Housing for Brighton & Hove City Council since Nov 2010. A member of the council’s Executive Leadership Team accountable for the commissioning and delivery of: Housing; Regeneration; Planning & Building Control; Transport; and City Clean & Parks services.

Previously worked for the Mayor for London as Director of Design, Strategy & Planning at the London Development Agency. Worked for the Housing Corporation as Assistant Director of Investment and National Housing Investment Programme Manager. Prior to that worked at HM Treasury.

As Director of Environmental Policy and Performance at London Borough of Brent commissioned environmental services and prior to that was Project Co-ordinator for the regeneration of Wembley. A professional town planner with experience at County and Unitary level.

Married with one daughter. Interests include martial arts, Shiatsu massage, cooking and gardening.

James started his commercial property career in Hong Kong with Richard Ellis. He has also worked for Healey & Baker in Lisbon and set up the commercial department for Hamptons International in Spain. James has been involved in the development of commercial and residential properties in New York and London too.


Michael Davies, Pro Vice Chancellor; University of SussexMichael Davies

Professor Michael Davies is Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Sussex. Prior to being appointed to his present post in January 2013 he was the Dean of Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand (from 2007) where he was also Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The University of Auckland Tamaki Innovation Campus. From 1997 to 2007 he was the Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee in Scotland, where he was also Deputy Principal and Dean of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Professor Davies was previously a lecturer in the School of Engineering at Cardiff University. He obtained his first degree from King’s College, University of London and his Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge. Following this he was a NATO/SERC Research Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently an Honorary Professor at both the University of Dundee and the University of Auckland. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand.
Throughout his career Professor Davies has been involved in consultancy related to his research interests, together with active participation in learned society and other professional activities. He has been Chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers Wales – Ground Engineering Group (of which he was a founding member), Chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Scottish Geotechnical Group and from 2005 to 2007 Chairman of the British Geotechnical Association. In 2008 he was elected as a member of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Geotechnical Society. Most notably from 2009-2013 Professor Davies was the Vice-President for Australasia of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and also was appointed as First Vice-President of the ISSMGE. Until his return to the UK at the start of 2013 he was a member of the Boards of Directors for both Auckland UniServices Limited and the New Zealand Centre for Advanced Engineering (CAENZ). He is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Sussex Innovation Centre and a member of the Greater Brighton Economic Board.


Mike Clark, Director of Estates & Facilities; University of BrightonSilhouette Resized

Mike is responsible for overseeing the development of the university’s estate and delivery of capital projects as well as estates management, maintenance and facilities management.

The university community comprises some 22,000 students and 2,600 staff (FTEs).  The university estate is currently around 170,000m2 Gross Internal Area and is concentrated in 45 key buildings across 17 sites in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.

Previously, Mike has worked in the public and private sectors undertaking the design and project management of a variety of building types involving the arts, commercial, museums & galleries and university sectors.

Mike is also the current Deputy Chair of the Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE) which promotes excellence in the strategic planning, management, operation and development of Higher Education estates and facilities.
