Dusty Amroliwala, Deputy Vice-Chancellor; University of East LondonDusty Amroliwala resized

Air Commodore Dusty Amroliwala’s career has spanned a number of completely different sectors. From 27 years in the Royal Air Force, where he finished his career as the Government’s Director of Defence Diplomacy, to senior Director roles in the Home Office and the Cabinet Office. Now the Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of East London (UEL), he is responsible for the delivering the key services across this modern University with some 18,000 students (both in London and overseas).

On 1 October 2015, Dusty was appointed by the Lord Chancellor to be a lay member of the Ministry of Justice’s Judicial Conduct Investigation Office. He is also a Trustee of Combat Stress and a Non-Executive Director of the BHRUT Hospitals NHS Trust. In October 2014, Dusty was appointed as Chair of the London Design and Engineering University Technical College Trust.

In July 1999, Dusty was made an Officer of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to the Crown. He holds an MA (International Relations) from King’s College London, an MBA from Imperial College London and is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies.

Professor David Latchman, Master; Birkbeck University of LondonDavid-Latchman resized

Professor David Latchman CBE is the Master of Birkbeck College, University of London, a post he took up in January 2003.   He is also Professor of Genetics at Birkbeck and University College, London.

He obtained a BA with first class honours in Natural Sciences, specialising in Genetics, from the University of Cambridge in 1978 and was awarded a PhD in 1981 and a DSc in 1994.

After academic posts in the Departments of Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Pathology at UCL he was appointed to the Chair of Human Genetics at UCL and became Dean of the Institute of Child Health in 1999.

Professor Latchman has published extensively in the field of Genetics and Molecular Biology. He has continued to pursue a high level of research activity in addition to his management responsibilities. He has a track record as a fund-raiser, having raised over £9 million whilst Dean at the Institute of Child Health and also has significant experience of the commercial exploitation of intellectual property, having obtained Venture Capital funding to found a Company (BioVex Ltd) on the basis of patents developed by his laboratory.

Professor Latchman also serves on a variety of other committees including London First Board and the National DNA Database Ethics Group (Home Office) and the Board of Universities UK. He was Chairman of London Higher, an umbrella organisation representing the interests of the Higher Education Sector from June 2006 to June 2010 serving the maximum two terms of office.

Professor Latchman was awarded the CBE for services to Higher Education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of June 2010.


Steve Howe, Director of Estates; University of the Arts LondonSteve Howe resized

Steve is a property professional with nearly 40 years experience in establishing estates strategy, delivering major capital projects and operating estates. Prior to entering the Higher Education sector he worked in project managing the design and construction of major commercial projects across London.

As Director of Estates at The University of the Arts London he is currently responsible for running and developing an estate spread over 15 academic sites that serves 18,500 students including catering, retail and accommodation operations. Steve recently completed 8 years as Director of Estates Projects at Imperial College London where he successfully delivered £0.75bn of world class scientific teaching and research facilities.


Liz Bromley, Registrar & Secretary; Goldsmiths University of LondonLiz-Bromley resized

Liz Bromley joined Goldsmiths in 2012 as Registrar and Secretary, having spent the previous six years as Director of Student Life and College Registrar at the University of Salford. At Salford, Liz was responsible for all the student facing services, including accommodation. The Student Life centre at University House was acclaimed as sector leading when it was launched.

Liz takes a leading role in the strategic development of Goldsmiths, with a commitment to enhancing the student experience. As Chief Operating Officer she is responsible for Finance, Estates, ICT, as well as HR, Student Services, Comms and Marketing, and Governance. During her time at Goldsmiths the investment in the estate has seen a significant increase, with its impact now being felt positively in the local community. She has recently led the search for a strategic partner to run student accommodation, and is taking the estates Masterplan into its next exciting phase of planning for new academic buildings.

Having been born and educated in Cheshire, Liz escaped to read English at Oxford, lived variously in the Middle East, Preston and Milton Keynes, but eventually returned to the North West to enjoy her daily commute to London. She has a husband, three daughters, one son, one step son, a dog and a cat.
