Birmingham Big City Plan Rea Valley Quarter

The consultation process has been kickstarted by Birmingham City Council as they plan a transformational project in the heart of the city.

The council are proposing an ambitious scheme which will deliver exceptional public space and deliver more than 5,000 new homes across a 180 acre site. The scheme, earmarked for the Rea Valley Urban Quarter, is part of the councils ‘Big City Plan’.

The proposed plans outline 12 acres of new and improved public space – with green parks and roofscapes alongside better connectivity and integration of the area into the surrounding city centre. [emaillocker id=”71749″]

Cllr Ian Ward said: “This announcement for the Rea Valley Urban Quarter demonstrates Birmingham’s continued ambition to transform the city, delivering new homes and improved employment opportunities. The announcement of Lendlease as our preferred development partner for the Birmingham Smithfield development has provided a catalyst to bring forward plans for the wider area and deliver the next phase of the Big City Plan. These exciting plans will create a vibrant, mixed use neighbourhood with a network of green spaces and routes at its heart providing high quality environments for current and future residents along with ecological benefits.”

The Council’s ‘Big City Plan’ is a 20-year city centre masterplan which will see incredible development across the city leading to economic growth. The plans include:

  • Creating 1.5m sq m of new floorspace
  • Creating 50,000 new jobs
  • Developing a more well-connected city
  • Providing 65,000 sq m of new public space
  • Cycle and walking route infrastructure delivered over 28 km
  • Delivering five areas of transformation supporting the growth of the city core

HS2 is one enabler of this growth – which is driving inward investment into the region. How HS2 will feed into these plans will be a focus of the HS2 Economic Growth Conference, and you can find out more about the event here >
