Plans to extend the metro line from Brierley Hill to Wednesbury in the West Midlands is set to be signed-off this week, with a proposed opening date set for 2023. The £449m extension being pushed forward by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), who’ll be speaking at our West Midlands Development Plans Event next week, will help ignite the regional economy, with an expected 35,000 new jobs being created through the new and improved connectivity.

Those jobs figures come from an independent report led by experts Lichfields, who believe the new extension will help to double the region’s economic output. The report states: “The extension of the Metro through Wednesbury to Brierley Hill provides a game-changing opportunity for the economic, social and environmental regeneration of the area.”

The plans showcase the metro running through Dudley town centre and connecting key leisure and tourist locations to the line – including Dudley Zoo and the Black Country Living Museum.

It’s not just jobs however that the planned infrastructure could help create – with those people working in the region needing to be houses. It’s expected that the new line could unlock a 250% increase in new houses per annum – with the economy doubling to just below £30m within the next 25 years in comparison to not building the extension.

Come and meet the West Midlands Combined Authority / Transport for the West Midlands at our event in Birmingham on the 19th March to here more about the future infrastructure plans for the region.
