At the South West Development Plans Conference on the 1st March we’ll be hearing from YTL Developments UK – the company behind the hugely ambitious Filton Airfield regeneration. The development is set to see 2,600 new homes being built, 3 new schools and plenty of employment and retail space which will create a new neighbourhood on the former airfield site, located in South Gloucestershire.

Outline planning permission has been granted for the 354 acre site – with 62 acres being used for:

  • Employment Space
  • 3 New Schools
  • Recreational Areas
  • Community Facilities
  • Doctors Surgery
  • New Railway Station
  • MetroBus Route

The project is to be carried out on one of the UK’s largest brownfield sites and is YTL’s first major project in the UK. The ambitious is to create a brand new community where people will live and work – seamlessly connected to the surrounding and existing communities. Connectivity will be created through the new transport links – a MetroBus Route and railway station – with cycle paths and roads to connect to neighbourhoods to other town and main cities an essential part of the design.

Thousands of jobs are set to be created in a huge boost for the regional economy, with a focus on high-tech, advanced engineering and aerospace.

Joining us at the South West Development Plans Conference will be YTL Developments Chief Operating Officer Barra Mac Ruairi, and he said of the plans: ”We’re delighted that our plans to deliver a new neighbourhood of much-needed homes, community facilities and great parks and green spaces to this area of South Gloucestershire will now become a reality. YTL have taken their time to produce a quality scheme as will be our hallmark. We’ve not rushed the application as it is the foundation for our future delivery. We have been investing in utilities, property and hotel assets across the UK for over a decade and we’re committed to building a positive social and economic legacy for future generations. We’d like to thank all those who have worked with us to shape these exciting plans and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the local community as the development becomes a reality.”

Although the detailed design has yet to be finalised the company has plans to create spacious homes with built-in ‘smart’ technology, set amongst landscaped public areas and green spaces and great transport connections. The final detailed design is set to ‘respect and reflect the heritage of the site’ with the inclusion of the Concorde Museum and Aero Collection, as well as incorporating an historic listed spitfire hangar which will be refurbished and brought forward as a key part of the first phase of delivery.

It’s expected that the building will commence on site in the Autumn of 2018, with potential homeowners starting to move in mid-2019.

It’s also been announced that Bristol City Council are considering the location for a proposed arena. Mayor Marvin Rees announced the pause in pre-construction work at Temple Quarter adding that ‘not enough work was carried out to look at other options in the first place’.

We’re excited to hear more from YTL Developments at the South West Development Plans Conference so join us there!
