Sunderland City Council has given Gentoo Group the go-ahead to develop 170 affordable homes across the city – spanning six different development sites.

Gentoo – who’re speaking at the upcoming North East Development Conference – are planning to build 900 homes in the region for rent and shared ownership by 2024, with these initial approved plans just the beginning.

The approved sites include:

  • 41 houses and bungalows at Keighley Avenue, Central Downhill [emaillocker id=”71749″]
  • 71 houses and bungalows at land west of Hylton Lane, Downhill
  • 11 houses and bungalows at Cricklewood Road, Hylton Castle
  • 24 houses and bungalows at Eastbourne Square, Carley Hill
  • 10 houses at Prestbury Road, Pennywell
  • 13 houses at the former Conishead Centre, Silksworth

Working in partnership with Homes England and Sunderland City Council, the multi-million pound investment will create 280 jobs on the new sites during construction phases and an additional £5.5m spend in the city region.

A spokesperson for Gentoo said: “I think tonight has been very positive and I commend the direction you’re taking your housing policy in, especially with the affordable rents.”

Nigel Wilson, Chief Executive Officer at Gentoo Group, added: “I’m extremely delighted that these major development in Sunderland have been given the go ahead, cementing our commitment to delivering more genuinely affordable homes for the city’s residents. For us, delivering affordable homes is about more than simply building new homes.

“By creating safe and secure housing we’re benefiting the emotional wellbeing, financial stability and health of the city’s residents and this is something we take pride in. Approval for these six sites mean we can start providing hundreds of high-quality, modern and spacious homes for affordable rent in Wearside and create better homes for thousands of residents over the next four years.”
