Cheshire East Council are aiming to have the funding in place for a £55m upgrade by the end of this year – as it prepares to get ready for the arrival of HS2. A business case has now been submitted to the Department for Transport – which highlights Spring 2020 as the project start date.

The arrival of HS2 is likely to bring additional visitors into the region whilst driving regeneration and development projects across the whole region – creating new homes, jobs and growth, which will be highlighted as the region’s leaders gather in November to take part in the HS2 Economic Growth Conference, supported by HS2 Ltd. This however will increase the strain on the infrastructure in place which is why Cheshire East are proposing the infrastructure improvements to the A500.

The road goes between Nantwich and Stoke to the south of Crewe, and provides the main route between Crewe and J16 of the M6. The dualling of the road will act as a key link between the motorway network and Crewe’s proposed new HS2 hub station and associated development around the hub. Widening of the road will cover a stretch between J16 of the M6 and the junction with the A531 at Meremoor Moss Roundabout, which is currently single carriageway, to alleviate congestion around Crewe.

The development around Crewe’s HS2 Hub will cover more than 120 hectares which could include:

  • A commercial hub – integrated station area, comprising a range of flexible development plots, connecting town, hub and landscape.
  • A mixed-use district – all housing within a 10 minute walk of the station, supported by a vibrant mix of programmes, with direct connections to the surrounding landscape.
  • Integrated green network – major infrastructure improvements, pedestrian focused with enhanced legibility.
  • A revitalised town centre – high-quality homes, wide range of shops and restaurants, with new and varied public spaces.
  • Rich culture and leisure offer – a new destination for the region, with an active night-time economy, supported by a programme of events and activities

We’re excited to hear more about Cheshire East’s preparations for HS2 arriving in the region and the incredible future vision for the region.
