• Major Placemaking Projects; the biggest developers behind multi-million and multi-billion pound projects in the North will take to the stage to highlight how the Northern Powerhouse agenda will enable them to bring more projects to the fore.

Some of the biggest names from a mix of public sector authorities, blue chip firms, investors and developers will all be taking to the stage to showcase the exceptional opportunities available across the north and drive forward the Northern Powerhouse Agenda.

Department for Transport – Andrew Stephenson MP, Minister of State

As Minister for State at the Department for Transport, Andrew is the main political driver behind the delivery of HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail. As both schemes edge closer, he will be interacting and updating our audience on project timelines, the economic growth they are set to deliver and how the government will support the North’s levelling up agenda over the course of this parliament.

Transport for Greater Manchester – Simon Warburton, Transport Strategy Director

As Transport for Greater Manchester step up delivery of their 2040 strategy, next year is set to be crucial. In light of the pandemic, the need to create healthier, smarter cities across the north is paramount and with ambitions for 50% of all journeys to be sustainable and green by 2040 Simon will talk about all the development needed to underpin this plan as well as how TFGM are preparing for the arrival of HS2 and NPR.

Cumberland Council – Jane Meek, Assistant Director Thriving Place and Investment

Jane will join the conference to update on the plans for St. Cuthbert’s – by far the largest site, in terms of capacity, from the Government’s Garden Village Programme. The £225m Southern Link Road will unlock St. Cuthbert’s which will see 10,000 homes built over the next 30 years as well as employment opportunities which will bring significant benefits to Carlisle and the wider county.

HS2 Ltd – Allan Cook, Chair

With the potential to be the most transformational development project in history, development on HS2 has begun in earnest for phase one. As attention turns to delivering Phase 2 and 2b of the scheme, Allan will give delegates the latest details of timelines, transformational economic growth benefits and development phases as part of his session.

Government Property Agency – Pat Ritchie CBE, Chair

Pat Ritchie CBE is an experienced senior leader in economic development, housing, and property, and is Chair of the Government Property Agency (GPA). Pat was Chief Executive of Newcastle City Council for over eight years, where she notably secured the multi-million-pound investment deal to bring Legal & General to Newcastle’s flagship ‘Helix’ development and led on negotiations to secure a devolution deal for the North of Tyne Mayoral Combined Authority where she was the first head of paid service. Pat led the city’s response to the pandemic and oversaw the Newcastle Covid Recovery Plan including an ambitious £50m plan to transform the city centre. Pat was appointed to Chair of the GPA in January 2020. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the National Leadership Centre and a member of Newcastle University Council.

 

The Northern Powerhouse Partnership – Henri Murison, Director

Chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, Henri has been instrumental to balancing public and private sector collaboration to drive forward the Powerhouse ambition. As official partners for the event, Henri is best placed to document and detail local and national machinations around what the future holds for the region in a post Covid-19, post-Brexit world.

Trafford Council – Richard Roe, Corporate Director of Place

Trafford Council is looking to increase the local economy via a plethora of major infrastructure projects like the Civic Quarter Masterplan that will develop 750 homes as well as a leisure centre and hotel. Other major projects include the Stretford Masterplan that will feature a phased redevelopment of Stretford Mall as well as an additional 800 surrounding residential units, and the Stamford Quarter redevelopment which will create 75,000 sq ft of commercial workspace as well as offering new retail and leisure outlets.

 

Public Sector PLC – Kate Howe, Development Director

As experts in asset management, development and regeneration through working with local authorities across the UK, Kate Howe is looking forward to chairing the conversations of the day and will be on hand to talk about how Public Sector Plc partnership model has the capability to unlock development and economic growth across the Midlands

CEG – David Hodgson, Head of Strategic Development

The masterminds behind the 57 acre, £400m masterplan for Kirkstall Forge in Leeds and major regenerators in other northern towns and cities, David will be talking in depth about phase 2 of the scheme and the catalyst it will act as for further major investment into Leeds.

Harworth Group – Ian Ball, Chief Operating Officer

As major UK wide developer investors, Harworth Group understand the importance of connecting up the North and have a number of key development schemes in the pipeline across the North. As part of this session Ian will go into depth about their forthcoming schemes and how the advent of Northern Powerhouse Rail will inform their project strategies over the coming years. This includes the second and third phases of the Gateway 36 masterplan, the Hoyland North Masterplan and the ongoing transformation of Kellingley Colliery.

University of York – Professor Kiran Trehan, Pro Vice Chancellor for Partnerships and Engagement

University of York is a key spoke on the North Yorkshire economic growth agenda and as a strategic pivot between the North West and the North East, York is a city that is home to a plethora of international talent that can contribute to making the North thrive. Kiran will talk about how campuses- including York’s- will have to develop to remain globally competitive and how education institutions can lead the charge in creating inclusive places.

 

Bruntwood – Chris Roberts, Chief Development Officer

The town centre regeneration pioneer Bruntwood have recently announced 2 major projects in Greater Manchester working together with Bury Council and Trafford Council to revitalise. The Trafford project will see 27 acres near the Stretford Mall redeveloped into over 300,000 sq ft of commercial and local community space, with 800 homes built whilst the Bury project will see the 15 acre site regenerated into a mixed-used development incorporating retail, leisure, hospitality and residential, with sustainability, education and wellness at its heart. Chris heads up these schemes on behalf of Bruntwood and will join the conference to reveal more intel on these exciting schemes for the region.

City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council – Kersten England, Chief Executive

Kersten is one of the most forward thinking and innovative voices surrounding local authority lead economic growth in the North and has played a key role in bringing Bradford to the forefront of the investment and regeneration agenda in Yorkshire. Both Northern Powerhouse Rail and HS2 will have intangible economic growth benefits to the city and as part of this session she will talk about how the borough is preparing for the arrival of both, how it aims to be the beneficiary of NPR related development and why Bradford is a place that developers should be looking at for future projects.

Leeds Beckett University – Professor Peter Slee, Vice Chancellor

Professor Peter Slee joined Leeds Beckett University as Vice Chancellor in September 2015. Peter joined Leeds Beckett from the University of Huddersfield where he had been Deputy Vice Chancellor since 2010. He has held a number of senior roles in higher education management at Northumbria, Durham and Aston universities and at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) where he was Head of Education Policy. Leeds Beckett University have partnered with Bruntwood SciTech to boost the long-term sustainability, growth and success of businesses in the Leeds City Region. The collaboration will build a culture of innovation within start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the region, through access to academic consultancy, student and graduate work placements, and the established expert business support services and mentoring provided by Leeds Beckett and Bruntwood SciTech – at Platform in Leeds city centre.

Arla Foods – Ash Amirahmadi, Managing Director

Arla Foods is a cooperative owned by 9,900 dairy farmers from across northern Europe, 2,400 of whom are in Great Britain.  Amongst its much-loved brands are Cravendale, Anchor butter, Lurpak and Castello.  The company employs around 3,500 people in England and Scotland, including at its processing sites in Settle and Stourton and at its headquarters near Leeds.

 

John Sisk & Son – Alan Rodger, UK Managing Director for the North

Alan has over 20 years’ experience of leading business units, major projects and change programmes in the construction & support services sector. An established leader, operating at regional board level, with collaborative and influencing skills developed across a broad range of sectors.

Maple Grove Developments – Karen Hirst, Managing Director

Maple Grove Developments were chosen to partner Lancashire County Council on the massive ‘Lancashire Central’ development which is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs. Industrial developments form a large part of the scheme as well as research and development, retail and leisure hubs. Aside from those plans, Maple Grove are also active across the north of England delivering industrial schemes in Yorkshire and the North West and Karen will be on hand to give insight into these schemes and how they will create future ‘place’ in the north.

AECOM – Paul Clarke, Strategic Account Director (HS2 & NPR)

Paul has 18 years’ experience in the delivery of infrastructure projects. Paul is a Fellow of the Permanent Way Institute. He is passionate about levering infrastructure investment to recognise Social Value and the levelling up agenda. As AECOM’s Strategic Account Director for HS2 & NPR, Paul leads a relationship driven approach to deliver benefits beyond contract value. The supply chain must provide the constructive challenge and thought leadership to support our clients and delivery bodies in achieving these once in a generation opportunities.

Leeds City Council – Angela Barnicle, Chief Officer Asset Management and Regeneration

Leeds City council are half way through their £10bn regeneration programme which is bringing to life a variety of major sites as part of their vision for an ambitious, well connected healthy city. Partnering with a raft of major developers to support projects such as Kirkstall Forge, Aire Park and Mabgate, they will also update delegates on plans for the South Bank and progress on the £450m Leeds Innovation District.

Scarborough Group International – Adam Varley, Development Director

Adam has recently been promoted to Development Director after just 18 months with SGI and In his new role, he will be responsible for the appraisal, delivery and asset management of the group’s commercial development projects across the Northern Powerhouse, including SGI’s flagship schemes – the next phase of Thorpe Park Leeds – a mixed-use community of 3.25m sq ft comprising high-quality business space, industrial and logistics space, retail, leisure and new homes – and Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park; a sports, health and wellbeing-focused Life Sciences Park where it is embarking on a first phase of 850,000 sq ft in partnership with Sheffield City Council. Adam will be on hand to talk about these schemes and SGI’s other future development plans in Leeds and West Yorkshire.
