Restoring & Regenerating Historic Buildings

This event will delve into the restoration of are re-purposing of historic buildings across the UK – highlight future projects, best practice and funding opportunities.

Historic buildings are unique. From their design and architecture to the historic and culture they possess – they add character to towns and cities, but many are at risk of being lost. At this online conference we’ll hear from multiple speakers who’re passionate about restoring historic buildings and regenerating those which are in desperate need of repair.

We’ll explore the most exciting projects in the UK – from large scale restorations, to the regeneration of heritage buildings into new homes and employment hubs, ensuring we don’t lose unique and historical assets.

Speakers will share their knowledge of working on such buildings, detailing the challenges they encounter and the opportunities which they find these schemes present, whilst they’ll also reveal inside information on future development projects in their pipeline.

  • Historic England – Trevor will provide an update on Historic England’s activities in Yorkshire and the North East and reference certain key projects that are in development stage and also those targeted for development where they are looking for support. The maintenance, restoration and regeneration of Historic Buildings is important to placemaking and also the North’s economy and Trevor will talk about the impact that they have on maintaining and developing communities.
  • Manchester City Council – Paul will provide an overview of the progress made so far in the ‘Our Town Hall’ project, the £330 million refurbishment, restoration and upgrade of the building which has been described as a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity.’ Paul will talk about the next steps that will be undertaken in the scheme and where the next opportunities lie.
  • Howard de Walden Estate – As of 2020 the Howard de Walden Estate in Marylebone, London was reported to be worth £4.7 billion with Laura tasked with developing the 92-acre estate’s sustainability strategy. Laura will discuss how the restoration and regeneration of the historic buildings in the estate will form a major part of their sustainability strategy and give intel on their upcoming project pipeline.
  • Oxford City Council – As one of the most historic cities in the UK the maintenance, restoration and regeneration of historic buildings in Oxford is important to placemaking and also the local economy. Katharine will talk about the council’s plans and where the future opportunities are for restoration and regeneration of historic buildings in the city.
