Rural Places Development Plans

Friday, 24th June 2022 1145hrs – 1330hrs

Online Webinar, Hopin

Rural communities across the UK are working to unleash the potential of the rural economy with multi-millions of pounds worth of investment over the coming years.

According to the Country Land and Business Association, the rural economy is 18% less productive than the national average, and if corrected, could add £43bn to the national GDP. Areas such as Shropshire, North Yorkshire, Devon and Norfolk are investing millions into rural communities to develop thriving, sustainable and better connected places to the benefit of residents and the wider UK. In this webinar, we will hear from the pioneers of rural development and regeneration and address how levelling up can be achieved in the British countryside.

Topics to be discussed:

  • £800m Shrewsbury Big Town Plan
  • And much more…

Shropshire Council – Dr Mark Barrow, Director of Place

Shropshire are leading the way in terms of modernising and revitalising its rural economy. Under Project Gigabit, the council has assisted by way of a £1m ‘top’-up’, paving the way for superfast broadband connectivity across the county and making the scheme more attractive to possible suppliers. The council has also received £12.25m from the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund to tackle economic decline and regenerate high streets. This comes in addition to plans to transform Shrewsbury’s town centre by creating a destination that could see 270 new homes built, a new ‘Shirehall’, a transport hub, offices and two hotels. The development forms a part of a £800m investment in the town under the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan.

North Yorkshire County Council – Liz Small, Growth and Heritage Services Manager

With town centres across North Yorkshire in line for their biggest investment in decades, the County Council are playing a key role in ensuring that the digital and physical infrastructure can keep up with the rising rural population. Working in partnership with NYnet, the North Yorkshire County Council is rolling out a £3.6m free public access Wi-Fi scheme to 20 market towns across the county.
