Gallagher Ltd has been successful in securing the groundworks and reinforced concrete superstructures package for Leicester City Football Club’s new world-class football training centre, for principal contractor McLaren.

The main building is an impressive structure that moulds into the landscape. Surrounding the building will be 11 full-size outdoor pitches, eight smaller pitches, five training grids and two goalkeeping areas. The indoor facilities include 35 bedrooms, a hydrotherapy pool, rehabilitation facilities and dining areas for the club’s academy and first team, as well as administration offices and a media centre. Next to the main building is a full-size indoor artificial pitch.

The centre will include a sports turf academy, to train the next generation of grounds-people, and a 499-seat mini-venue show pitch, so that the under-23 and under-18 teams can experience a match environment.

The programme for the works is extremely fast involving close co-ordination between Gallagher Ltd, the earthworks contractor, specialist pitch contractor and the steel frame contractor. The centre is set to complete in mid 2020.

Ken Baillie, Managing Director of Gallagher Ltd, commented: “We are delighted to be working on this important project for Leicester City Football Club and McLaren. We were approached directly by McLaren to tender for this project following the successful completion of other projects for them such as a new leisure and retail unit at Intu Lakeside Shopping Centre, and the Amazon distribution centre in Tilbury. Although Gallagher has primarily been a South East business, this contract highlights our ability and willingness to work further afield for the right clients on the right contracts.”
