Oxfordshire County Council Development

Oxfordshire County Council have agreed to borrow up to £120m which will fund both major and minor infrastructure projects across the county. The plans, aimed at improving the overall quality of the transport routes, has been agreed to a ‘significant reduction’ in road quality – leading to increased damage to vehicles and a spike in personal injury claims.

Oxfordshire County Council, who’re set to speak at the Oxfordshire Development Plans Conference later this year, acknowledged the under-investment in their roads, but it’s hoped the expected growth Oxfordshire is set to see over the coming years will allow for the lending to happen, with the delivery of more homes creating increases in council tax income and other economic benefits to the region.

The investment is likely to see £80m spent on highways with the remaining £40m being used around council-owned sites such as health services and schools.

Speaking of the announcement Cllr Yvonne Constance, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: ”Oxfordshire’s expected growth in homes and council tax income gives us the scope to borrow money to invest that will, over the long term, save us money. We all know that our roads, pavements and bridges need extra investment and this plan seeks to unlock the funding to allow that to happen. This plan gives us a logical and sustainable way out of the current situation – the benefits of which we hope people will begin to see on our roads sooner rather than later.”

Oxfordshire County Council will be represented at the Oxfordshire Development Plans Conference by Susan Halliwell, Director of Planning and Place. She’ll join 15 other speakers along with 200+ attendees.
