Business & industrial park planned for West Yorkshire

Posted on: March 13th, 2018

Keyland Developments are planning a 400,000sq m industrial and business park on a former water treatment site. The development, which would transform the former Yorkshire Water site in Kirklees, would create 800 new jobs in a massive regeneration of the site.

The development would be a huge boost for the regional economy, which is set to be the topic of conversation at the West Yorkshire Economic Growth Conference, which will see regional and local authorities join together with other public and private sectors leaders to discuss the key topics such as devolution, housing, infrastructure and skills.

The 400,000sq m site has been given the backing of councillors, with approval given for the brownfield employment site. Located close to Bradford the site has been identified as within the Kirklees Council’s development strategy as a potential industrial site, and the only one which wasn’t situated within the green belt.

Infrastructure is set to be a talking point of development site. Located at a major intersection of the M62 and the M606 although it’s hoped that the surrounding transport links could be improved to reduce any strain from an increase in commuters and workers.

The site itself is likely to have a wide range of unit sizes to address a shortage of new industrial accommodation in the area – with some current sites in North Kirklees and South Bradford already operating at full capacity. It’s hoped addressing the issue will entice new businesses to the area, whilst also retaining businesses and boosting the regional economy – with the close transport links to cities such as Bradford, Leeds and Manchester.

Peter Garrett, managing director of Keyland Developments, said: “Securing approval to bring back into use the strategically important North Bierley site is an excellent result and we are delighted that such an extensive and well-located site will now be able to achieve its full potential. The demand for new industrial and distribution space to support the growing needs of regional businesses is well documented and, in addition to facilitating some 800 new jobs, this scheme can protect the long-term needs of local and regional occupiers and potentially welcome inward investment to the area.”
