Next week two projects which are set to transform part of the Kirkgate area of Leeds are set to go before councillors. The two projects, which will see the redevelopment of several historic buildings, are set to be given the green light with recommendations that planning permission is granted.

The area is set to be one of the talking points at the Transforming Leeds Conference in April which focuses on the city region which is set to double in size with the regeneration of South Bank and the arrival of HS2, and the Kirkgate regeneration will also be key to this.

Developers Rushbond are behind one of the schemes which focuses on the First White Cloth Hall, a Grade-II listed property which will be rejuvenated if approval is given. They’ll be lodging for full-planning and listed-building applications for the property including reconstruction of the demolished west wing, restoration of the east wing, new shop fronts, creation of a glazed atrium and reinstatement of the cupola. The aim would be to create space for a new shop, financial or professional services, café/restaurant, bar and office space.

The second project will be delivered by Cityfusion, who are looking to develop land opposite the First White Cloth Hall and create mixed-use space. Their proposal will see 101-104 Kirkgate recreated into a five-storey building, with the Crown Street Car Park at the rear being transformed into a seven storey building. The mixed-use site will create private sector rented flats and new units suitable for retail or leisure purposes.

The plans are set to go infront of the planning committee at Leeds City Council on the 8th March, and there is positive news for both with approval being recommended.

Join us at the Transforming Leeds Conference in April to hear from the council, Historic England, HS2 Growth Partnership, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and more.
