London Luton Airport Development Plans Expansion Council

Council owned London Luton Airport have revealed plans to expand the airport – delivering a second terminal. The plans, which would increase passenger numbers from 18m to 32m per annum, will be a focus of the Airport Cities Development Conference – where the Airport are set to speak.

The announcement comes as the airport continues to grow year on year – and it’s expected to hit full capacity by 2020. The proposed plans, which will need to be signed off by the Transport Secretary, include:

  • Development of a new second terminal building
  • Building to be delivered to the north of the runway
  • Part of the development would encroach on Wigmore Valley Park
  • However new parkland and open space would be created over a larger site to the east of the existing park

Chair of London Luton Airport Andy Malcolm said: “We’re excited to be able to present our preferred option which responds to our first public consultation and outlines how we can move towards making the best use of our existing single runway in line with Government policy, deliver maximum benefit to the local, regional and national economy, and actively manage environmental impacts. In our Vision for Sustainable Growth 2020-2050 we outlined that the maximum capacity of the runway could be up to 38m per annum. How this might be best achieved was the focus of the consultation we carried out in 2018 and it remains our assessment and aspiration that the airport can deliver these volumes in the longer term.”
