Sheffield Business Park Research Energy Centre

The green light has been given for a multi-million pound development by the University of Sheffield – as they continue to become the UK’s leading university for engineering and hi-tech manufacturing.

The proposed scheme will see the creation of a new research hub – which will entice global hi-tech and innovative brands to South Yorkshire in a time where the area is thriving, with McLaren, Rolls Royce and Boeing Airlines just two companies currently calling Sheffield their home. The Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC) will be situated on Europa Avenue at Sheffield Business Park, expanding the already thriving business cluster situtated there.

The University of Sheffield / Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre will be revealing details of their growth plans for the site at our HS2 Economic Growth Conference in Leeds, and details can be found here >

The development of the new TERC will cost over £10m, and will primarily develop low carbon technologies for power systems using renewable energy, bioenergy and ‘smart grid’ equipment whilst also featuring a carbon dioxide capture facility.

Plans are already in the pipeline to further expand the site with a £20m Lightweighting Centre already in the pipeline – with a vision that the site will eventually drive almost £100m annually into the local South Yorkshire economy, before eventually becoming Europe’s largest research-led business hub and science research cluster.

The University of Sheffield said of the announcement: “The aims are to increase interaction between the university sector and manufacturing businesses, as well as securing further inward investment on Sheffield Business Park and surrounding area resulting from the concentration of research and development facilities.”

The higher education institution is leading the way in the UK having recently been named the best in the UK for income and investment in engineering research after generating a mammoth £124m in funding over the past 12 months – and that investment looks set to continue.

Sheffield City Council recently confirmed at our event that the arrival of HS2 is a key reason for companies wanting to invest into the region – and we’re set to hear about the investment and development schemes HS2 could unlock at the HS2 Economic Growth Conference in September – an event officially supported by HS2 Ltd.
