Swan Housing Association are set to enter into a joint venture with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to deliver a massive residential led project delivering around 1,600 new homes. The announcement that Swan have been recommended to enter the collaborative partnership with the council is an exciting step forward for the development which will help transform the Queensway area of Southend.

Once confirmed Swan Housing and Southend Council – both set to speak at the Thames Estuary Development Conference – will get to work on developing a full masterplan for the project which is likely to be put together by 2020. Swan have been backed by the council having met their requirements – with Swan outlining their proposal for 1,600 new homes with 500 of those being affordable.

Speaking of the announcement, which also incorporates a community fund and improvements to energy and sustainability, Deputy Leader James Courtenay said: “Better Queensway is the biggest regeneration project we’re undertaing in a generation and will sekk to transform this vital area right in the centre of our town, delivering better housing, better living and a better place for both the current residents and those that will make central Southend their home in the future. This regeneration will help make this area a key entrance into our town centre and connect what will be a thriving new community with it and also help us to deliver a key part of our resident led ambition for 2050. We’re delighted to reach this key milestone and recommend Swan Housing, an excellent organisation with great values, commitment to the community and vast knowledge and experience of the local area, as our preferred bidder. This is really just the beginning and there is much more work to be done.”
