Ilford Station is set to be revamped with a third entrance to prepare for the likely wave of new commuters. With 6,000 new homes planned for the borough Transport for London (TfL) are looking to get the station ready to be able to accommodate the increase.

Transport for London will contribute £750,000 to a £2.2m project to create a south doorway for train users coming from Ilford Hill, according to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan whilst other funds would be sourced through TfL’s Growth Fund and Redbridge Council’s Community Infrastructure Fund.

Leader of Redbridge Council, the area which is set to see the new residential builds being built, said that the local authority has secured the necessary land for the development through the planning adding: ”As Ilford becomes an increasingly popular place to live, a new third entrance will make it easier and more accessible for people to use the station and connect to and from buses. With 6,000 new homes being built by 2030, multi-million pound improvements to the town centre current under way, a new cultural centre in the pipeline and the Elizabeth line opening soon, Redbridge looks forward to continuing working in partnership with TfL to deliver all necessary transport infrastructure to accommodate and accelerate growth and further enhance Ilford as a fantastic location to live and work.”

Transport for London are set to speak at our London’s Major Estates Development Plans Conference next week alongside the Houses of Parliament, Network Rail, Old Oak & Park Royal Development Corporation and One Public Estate, and they’ll be sharing the plans for stations across the capital and how property development will feed into this to create communities and essential mixed-use space around the stations. With the Growth Fund benefiting other stations such as Walthamstow Central Station, Colindale and Elmers End, and many other projects happening in the Capital it’s certainly an exciting time.

TfL are working with the local councils, property developers and stakeholders to finalise the funding packages for the four schemes, with a hope that work can begin on delivering them later this year. Alex Williams, Director of City Planning at TfL, said: ”Our Growth Fund is helping to unlock transport schemes which might not have been funded, helping to create more homes and jobs across London. By promoting good growth across London, we can help the capital continue to prosper while providing new transport options for Londoners.”
