Council Leaders and Chief Executives from across Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees and Calderdale are set to gather on Tuesday with a focus of driving economic growth across the region and unlocking opportunities for those living and working in the region.

More than three hundred construction and property industry professionals will attend the West Yorkshire Economic Growth Conference which will see some of the region’s biggest names in business, politics and local government lead regional economic discussions and debates, whilst sharing presentations on the future vision for West Yorkshire and the major housing, commercial, leisure and infrastructure schemes set to happen in the coming years. The day-long event will provide a unique opportunity for delegates to hear about the collaborative approach to economic growth from the public and private sectors, whilst seeing first hand through a series of presentations how major developers, land owners and investors are planning to contribute to the success of West Yorkshire.

Ahead of the West Yorkshire Economic Growth Conference Cllr Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council and panellist on the Northern Powerhouse discussion, said: ‘’These are exciting times for Leeds City Region; the arrival of HS2 and its impact on our economic prospects will be truly transformational and will provide much more than just transport, creating opportunities for inward investment, skills and housing, as well as generating a significant increase in tourism. With the largest regeneration projects in the north and high levels of development taking place across the region, it is crucial that we ensure we are inclusive and that we give everyone across the city region the chance to reap the benefits. It is also important that we continue working with partners from all sectors to understand the challenges we may face. The West Yorkshire Economic Growth Conference in September is a fantastic opportunity for key players to come together and discuss where we are as a region now, and where we hope to be in the future. I am looking forward to attending.”

Cllr Tim Swift, Leader of Calderdale Council who’ll be chairing the event summarising Q&A Session, said: ”In Calderdale, we’re delivering economic regeneration through unprecedented levels of investment, which will help to realise our Vision for the borough in 2024. Our investment in transport, public realm and new facilities will generate inclusive growth, creating a socially and economically vibrant Calderdale. At the heart of our regeneration agenda, we want Calderdale to be a place where people choose to invest, live, work, visit and study. Our transformation of Calderdale will achieve a place that is well-connected, with a flourishing and sustainable economy.”

One of the key focus areas of the West Yorkshire Economic Growth Conference will be housing – with the need to accelerate the delivery of housing in each and every area of West Yorkshire. Our housing panel is set to hear from five housebuilders/developers who’ll be essential in ensuring that happens including Avant Homes, Stonewater, Kirklees Council – Big Build, Strata Homes and Keepmoat Homes. Whilst they all have ambitious plans to increase housing across the region one of the highlights of the conference will be the exclusive insight by Leader of Kirklees Council Cllr Shabir Pandor on Kirklees Big Build, recently announced at MIPIM – as they look to deliver 10,000 new homes across the area by 2023.

Jacqui Gedman, Chief Executive at Kirklees Council, said of their plans: ‘’Kirklees is a premier location right at the heart of the UK. Its long standing industrial heritage has flexed and transformed to deliver unrivalled expertise in advanced manufacturing and precision engineering. Innovation, high quality of life and connectivity are key economic assets, and our commitment to deliver 10,000 new homes by 2023 reflects the scale of our ambition and commitment to enable our communities to flourish and prosper. Here in Kirklees we are committed to building a strong and inclusive economy, creating the right conditions for growth by working with our partners in the district, West Yorkshire and beyond.’’

Chris Calvert, Executive Director of Pegasus Group and Chair of the Housing Session at the event, said: ”The Government has set a target for 300,000 new homes to be built per year. The Yorkshire region has a major part to play in achieving that target, giving rise to many opportunities to ensure that the economic strategies put in place by Local Authorities and the LEP’s are realised. Plan making in the region is beginning to gather pace – but with a new twist, arising from the recent publication of the changes to the Governments NPPF and the standard methodology for calculating housing targets.”
