Mills Development Conference; Supported by Historic England and Homes England | Event

Mills drove forward the industrial revolution within the UK – but now thousands of mills lay derelict and underutilised. This event will delve into the incredible opportunities they present to help drive economic growth and tackle the housing crisis. Mill owners, regional authorities, regeneration experts and major developers will all come together to discuss their future projects and how those in the audience can get involved. At this event you’ll

  • Meet mill owners who’re looking to revitalise their derelict buildings but need the support of the built environment industry
  • Hear from the public sector on how they’ll be working in collaboration to bring forward mill regeneration
  • Meet the developers and investors looking to transform these buildings through multi-million pound projects
  • Discover the newest schemes which are yet to be announced, and hear how your company can get involved

Mills were behind the original Northern Powerhouse whilst helping to trigger technical innovation, stimulate new trade and help transform the transport network. However, with the 20th-century decline in national textile manufacturing, many of these heritage and characterful buildings face uncertain futures – but as an industry, we can ensure these buildings are not lost forever.

Many are now underused or vacant – and there are many challenges with regenerating and adapting mills to new purposes, but they also bring many opportunities. The opportunity in West Yorkshire (where the event is set to be held) alone is staggering – there are 1,350 mills which are underused or vacant, which have the potential to create thousands of jobs, 27,000 homes and more.

Nationally there are fine examples of how to regenerate these buildings into thriving new locations – and at this event, we’ll delve into best practice from those who’ve done it, but we’ll also hear from local authorities, investors and major developers as they share their vision and future plans for these impressive heritage buildings.

PROGRAMME & SPEAKERS

You can be sure to walk away from this conference with a huge amount of new information, business cards and potential work opportunities as we delve into the huge opportunities vacant mills and heritage buildings can present – and how we as an industry can collaborate to bring these buildings back to life.

Through a series of exceptional panel discussions, we’ll hear from the experts at the forefront of the conversation who’ll share their insider knowledge with the audience – alongside open Q&A using Slido for high audience participation. We’ll then delve into gripping presentations where leading developers will reveal how they’re looking to redevelop mills and bring forward major new schemes, sharing best practice on past schemes but also looking at the future projects and how those with similar values and aims around historic mills can help these buildings thrive once more.

The sessions for the conference include:

  • Keynote Speeches
  • Mills – Their Potential Through Regeneration
  • Mills – Opportunities For Development
  • Mills – Major Development Opportunities
