What does tackling climate change mean for you, your organisation, and your customers?

Teesside University and Thirteen Housing Group will share recent findings on the challenges of retrofitting residential properties, the consumer barriers, and possible ways of addressing barriers to adoption of new decarbonisation technologies

Housing associations, local councils and private landlords are facing numerous challenges in the journey to achieving net zero for residential properties. This one-hour webinar highlights research findings on how current retrofit properties are performing, what you need to do to decarbonise older residential properties, what the barriers are to achieving decarbonisation and how to overcome them, and how to successfully engage with customers whilst adapting your housing stock.

The shared findings show how the adoption of the low-carbon home requires social housing organisations to strengthen mechanisms for resident engagement early in the process and to provide a platform that will encourage energy citizenship through which residents link pro-environmental behaviours in the home to broader networks of social action on climate change.

Topics covered will detail:

a live urban retrofit project
an assessment of Tees Valley residents’ opinions and experiences of low carbon technologies and behaviours based on qualitative interviews
an assessment of Tees Valley and national residents’ opinions and experiences of low carbon technologies and behaviours based on online survey data

Teesside University – Prof Matthew Cotton, Professor of Public Policy

Matthew will be joining us to share ,Teesside University and Thirteen Housing Group’s recent findings on the challenges of retrofitting residential properties, the consumer barriers, and possible ways of addressing barriers to adoption of new decarbonisation technologies and understanding the impact of low carbon retrofit in residential properties.

Teesside University – Prof Natasha Vall, Acting Dean, Social Sciences, Humanities and Law

Natasha Vall is Professor of Urban and Cultural History and the Acting Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law at Teesside University. She specialises in urban renewal in industrial and post-industrial cities. Her current work is focussed on the development of an innovative and sustainable infrastructure that brings together community members, policymakers, researchers, and businesses to develop a research agenda that will effect real change in the Tees Valley region. Her projects aligned to this work are funded by UKRI, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Teesside University – Prof Paul Van Schaik, Prof of Psychology, School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law

Paul van Schaik is Professor of Psychology at Teesside University. His research specialises in models of human judgement and decision-making, in particular how people make decisions in the context of the energy transition as well as cybersecurity and online privacy. His current research on the energy transition is funded by the Community Resilience Fund and his current research on online privacy is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Thirteen Group – Dr Angela Brockbank, Head of Growth

Thirteen Group are in the midst of a £1bn home building programme and are reaching out of their traditional region in the North East to develop schemes in West Yorkshire and beyond. All of their projects aim to combine housing with wider urban regeneration masterplans and Angela joins the conference to showcase their forthcoming pipeline and present case studies as to where her organisation are supporting town centre revival.

Teesside University – Dr Mike Knowles, Principal Lecturer Research and Innovation, School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies

Dr Mike Knowles is Principal Lecturer in Research and Innovation in the School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies. His research is focussed on the development, maintenance, and operation of energy efficient technologies, as well as the skills required by graduate engineers and the role of postgraduate research in supporting the growth of sustainable engineering practice.
