New images have been revealed showcasing what the proposed £49m flood defence scheme for Preston and South Ribble could look like – ahead of our Flood Prevention Conference in January.

Details have now been finalised by the Environment Agency who’ve revealed further plans for the project – which will now go through the planning permission process with the hope this this being approved within weeks. The scheme will benefit almost 5,000 properties and 350 businesses over a 9km stretch of the region. If given then go-ahead the scheme will start next year, being completed in 2024. The project is just one in a number of major flood prevention projects which will be discussed at the Flood Prevention Conference in January.

The plans will see existing flood defences replaced, repaired and upgraded – utilising more modern materials and creating taller defences. Also planned is “Ribble Sidings” – where new wetland habitats will be created within a new network of footpaths along the South Ribble side of the River Ribble.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We will be working to remove, replace and repair 9km of flood defences in total, we are working with partners to minimise disruption. The project will be constructed starting in 2021 and ending in 2024. During this time our communities should expect disruption in the form of road closures, construction works, footpath and cycle route diversions, increased noise and the increased presence of contractors.”
