Speakers

Professor Nigel Slater, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Enterprise & the Region; University of CambridgeNigel Slater resized

I am Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise and Region) and a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology in the University of Cambridge.

My career has been in bioprocessing research and practice and I have held positions in both industry and academia. At Cambridge my research group investigates new ways to make and stabilise bio-pharmaceutical products including proteins, DNA, viruses and cells. I have been PI of over 70 significant bioprocessing research projects that have been funded by government and by industry. At the Wellcome Research Laboratories I led process development for the Campath-1H monoclonal antibody through to pivotal clinical testing and as a principal of Cobra Therapeutics I was involved with the process development for a GDEPT retrovirus gene therapy vector through to Phase 2 clinical testing.

I was a Non-Executive Director of Cobra Bio-Manufacturing PLC from its IPO on AIM in 2002 until its acquisition in 2010, and a principal of Angel Technology Ltd, a nutri-food company that won the Queen’s Award for Innovation 2006 and the International Sial d’Or Prize for the most innovative new UK nutritional product at the Paris International Food Conference 2004.

Dr Keith Carne, First Bursar; King’s College CambridgeKeith Carne resized

I am the First Bursar at King’s College and was nominated to the Audit Committee by the Bursars’ Committee. I find the Audit Committee both interesting and important because of its role in overseeing the efficient operation of the University, including the interaction of the Colleges with the central University.

Before being appointed as Bursar at King’s I was a lecturer in the Department of Pure Mathematics. My chief research concerns were in geometric complex analysis and probability theory.

Deborah Griffin, Bursar; Homerton College, CambridgeDeborah Griffin resized

After taking a degree in Economics at UCL, Deborah qualified as a Chartered Accountant and worked in the hotel industry before joining Andersen and then Deloittes where she has been working  in corporate finance.

Deborah has been involved with women’s rugby since the late 1970s.   She currently represents women’s and girls’ rugby on the Council  of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and is also a member of the Audit & Risk Committee and Community Game Board for the RFU.  Prior to the integration of the Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) with the RFU on July 1 2012, Deborah chaired the RFUW and now chairs the Integration Board.
