Community Engagement and Marketing Conference

Friday, 25th November 2022 0930hrs – 1500hrs

Online Conference, YouTube

This online event will delve crucial elements of the industry which often don’t get the attention they deserve – community engagement and marketing. Projects and plans can often be refused and delayed when communities aren’t fully supportive of projects – but in this event we look at how we can get them engaged and involved, utilising their local knowledge to improve projects, getting their buy-in to the local benefits and truly helping to unlock future regeneration and development.

Experts from local authorities, developers and leading organisations in the space will take to the stage to discuss, explore and showcase best practice and future thinking in the space.

We’re set to have an exceptional line-up of speakers:

Earls Court Development Company – Rebekah Paczek, Director of Public Affairs and Community Relations

The Earls Court Development Company has an ambitious plan to ‘bring the wonder back’ to Earls Court – with Rebekah is heavily involved in the work to drive forward this game-changing development.  The masterplan looks to regenerate around 40 acres of land on the former Exhibition Centre site through a JV made up of Delancey, Dutch pension fund manager APG and Transport for London.  The ECDC are focused on working with communities and stakeholders from day one – with the masterplan aiding social value and economic inclusion – with decisions such as handing back the West Kensington and Gibbs Green housing estates to Hammersmith and Fulham Council which were initially included in the masterplan being an example of community led decision making.

Homes England – Colin Parry, Community Engagement Manager

Investing over £4bn into building new homes, unlocking plots for future development and bringing over 450-hecates of derelict land back into use are just some of the key priorities set by Homes England. With this scale of development activity it’s crucial that the communities they’re working in are consulted, engaged and involved throughout the journey to deliver the benefits that community requires. Colin has been with Homes England since 2010 – having previously worked within the private sector, and he’ll be sharing his expertise on how Homes England are engaging and communicating with key stakeholders across both the public and private sector and the positive impact this is having pre-development and planning consent.

Co.Cre8 – Karen Elson, Knowledge Director and HS2 Learning Legacy Advisor

Karen is a director of knowledge and partner at Co.Cre8.  She provides expertise in setting up knowledge eco-systems to embed continuous learning within and between major projects.  She has 25+ years’ experience in construction projects including HS2, Houses of Parliament Restoration and Renewal, Crossrail and the London 2012 Olympics.  Karen has led the implementation of award winning learning legacy programmes embedding an industry-wide methodology for capturing and dissemination learning from major projects across the construction and transport industries.   Previous experience includes programme assurance for the Olympic Delivery Authority, PPM consultant for Arup and as a chartered engineer on railway and construction projects for Arup and Atkins. Karen is a big advocate of volunteering and has had various NED roles over the last 10 years and is currently a Trustee for the Museum of Dartmoor Life and a volunteer vaccinator for St John’s Ambulance.

National Highways – Damian Greenfield, Regional Stakeholder Manager and Associate for the Consultation Institute

With billions of pounds worth of development activity in the pipeline, National Highways are one of the largest clients within the construction and built environment industry. Their work across the UK’s highways drive economic growth and alleviate traffic pain-points, but at the same time there can also be controversy with new road infrastructure – so engagement and communication is key. Damian will share his experience and knowledge – specifically focusing on the longer term project legacy and how National Highways is leaving a positive footprint and impact in the communities they touch.

MPC – Nikki Davies, Managing Director

Nikki has over a decade of experience in running tailored programmes of community consultation and has overseen a diverse range of projects in the residential, commercial, energy and affordable housing sectors. Nikki is also currently pioneering MPC’s products and services in the social value field. She is leading on the strategy and delivery of the communications and stakeholder engagement for Homes England’s phase of the 4,000 homes Sustainable Urban Extension in Attleborough and has provided strategic oversight to numerous other ongoing large scale and long terms projects with clients such as Places for People, Thakeham, Legal and General and The Church Commissioners.

BoKlok – Harry O’Conor, Community Engagement Lead

BoKlok – a joint investment and housing venture between Swedish retail giants Ikea and Skanska. Having been in the UK market place for only a few years BoKlok have very recently gone through the process of creating their UK community engagement strategy from the beginning – and Harry will share intel into their approach, their learnings and the undertakings they’re making to make further improvements over their next schemes. 140 homes in Arun and 112 in Littlehampton are just a few of their recent announcements that they look to bring forward.

Commonplace – Amy Hazlehurst, Business Development Manager

Amy is a Local Government Consultant at Commonplace, an online engagement platform about empowering positive conversations for change in the places where we live, work and play. Working specifically with Local Authorities in the North of England, she helps Councils maximise their engagements with local residents about issues of change in their area. With the project set to touch the lives of millions of people over several years community engagement and involvement is of paramount importance. Maddelyn will discuss how HS2 is working to involve communities in the project, respond to questions and concerns and consult with them as it moves forward as well as how this engagement will continue over the full lifespan of the project.

WSP – Kerry Bangle, Director, Transport Planning London and the South East

Kerry is WSP’s Director for Transport Planning, London and the South East. She has 24 years’ experience in a wide variety of transport and Government advisory roles in the UK and Australia. She is particularly adept at dealing with the challenge of high-profile infrastructure projects in complex and politically-charged environments as demonstrated through her senior roles on HS2, Crossrail, airport expansion projects, London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone and is currently leading the technical work on a road user charging scheme in Cambridge.
