Data Centre development continues to ramp up as consumer demand for data and the increasing automation of day to day life drive the need for new capacity. The UK is already recognised as a global leader in the market, and the raft of major new data centre projects is ensuring this will continue to be the case.

15 data centre projects with a total capacity of more than 160MW were completed in 2020, with 2021 set to increase the rate of growth yet further. The sector is forecast to be worth £6.5 billion annually to the UK economy by 2025.

  • VIRTUS Data Centres – VIRTUS Data Centres, the UK’s fastest growing data centre provider owns, designs, builds and operates the country’s most efficient and flexible data centres. Daryl co-founded VIRTUS in 2008 and has helped them grow from one Data Centre of 3MW to the number one London provider. VIRTUS now operates 11 of London’s leading facilities providing over 178MW of capacity and customers including leading global organisations in the financial services, technology, media and education sectors.
  • Kao Data – Kao Data develop and operate advanced data centres for high performance colocation. Backed by Legal & General Capital and Goldacre, Kao Data is one of the largest data campus developments in the UK. As part of its continued expansion, Kao Data has recently signed an agreement to acquire two UK prime location data centres which will allow them to expand their capacity to 55MW. A £130 million investment was recently agreed with the listed global infrastructure business, Infratil which will enable this expansion.
  • Tech UK – Emma leads the data centre programme for technology sector trade body techUK, representing the interests of UK operators to Government and other stakeholders. She influences policy, mitigates compliance burdens, alerts the sector to risks and manages specialist groups, including the UK Council of Data Centre Operators. She negotiated a Climate Change Agreement for the sector in 2014, worth over £200M to UK operators and continues to lobby hard on behalf of the industry on issues ranging from energy costs to regulatory compliance. Most recently she negotiated key worker status, protection for construction sites and quarantine exemption for data centre staff and contractors during COVID-19 and continues to work closely with UK government on sector resilience. She produces thought leadership, policy responses, white papers, briefings and infographics covering topics from generator emissions to Brexit. Recent outputs include a Sector Energy Routemap, a discussion paper on the challenges of attributing carbon to cloud services, and a sector market overview.
