Navigating Green Infrastructure Challenges in Development; Sponsored by GreenBlue Urban

Friday, 9th July 2021 1345hrs – 1530hrs

With the increasing urbanisation of our towns, pressure on space to plant trees is huge. Priorities are challenged, our road systems are increasing with traffic and cyclists and the plethora of below ground constraints are becoming ever difficult to overcome. An understanding of the constraints our urban areas present is critical if long term canopy cover is to be achieved.

During the webinar GreenBlue Urban will introduce a number of speakers that have successfully incorporated green into grey – highlighting challenges that have been overcome.

Speakers include:

Michelle Ryan,
Senior Arboriculture & Landscape Specialist
Howard Gray,
PR & Specification Consultant
Ruth Voigt,
Environment and Sustainability Functional Lead
Neil Strong,
Biodiversity Strategy Manager

Our online webinars will merge our face-to-face events with a virtual platform – providing networking opportunities, an exceptional panel discussion and debate, speaker presentations and an exhibition hall.

Transport for London – Michelle Ryan, Senior Arboriculture & Landscape Specialist

Michelle is one of TfL’s arboriculture experts, and has been involved in providing advice across the business (including for projects) on the constraints and opportunities associated with tree planting and green infrastructure in an urban context. She’ll will provide detailed picture and overview of TfL’s approach to green infrastructure across the billions of pounds worth of TfL developments in the capital.

GreenBlue Urban – Howard Gray, PR & Specification Consultant

Howard is a passionate advocate for urban trees, having planted his first tree nearly 45 years ago. Understanding the many conflicting claims on the space in our towns and cities, he works with the many stakeholders to achieve the best possible chance for every tree to grow to its species potential. Enthusiastically promoting proven green infrastructure planting methodologies, presenting to a wide range of different disciplines in many countries globally, he views himself as an active ambassador for GreenBlue Urban.

The East West Rail Alliance – Ruth Voigt, Environment and Sustainability Functional Lead

The East West Rail Alliance was established in 2015 to deliver East West Rail Phase 2 (EWR2), connecting communities and businesses between Bicester and Bedford, and Milton Keynes and Aylesbury, providing passengers with much improved cross-country rail links – helping to create jobs, boost economic growth, encourage people out of their cars and onto public transport and enable sustainable housing development for generations to come. Ruth will talk about challenges faced in planning and delivering this scheme from an environmental point of view and how they are incorporating the planting of trees into this important infrastructure project.

Network Rail – Neil Strong, Biodiversity Strategy Manager

Neil will join the session to discuss the challenges Network Rail face incorporating green into grey throughout their property and infrastructure projects. Network Rail have extensive land in their portfolio for development as well as an extensive estate and David will go into detail about their approach to tree planting, the challenges tree planting brings and how it fits into their wider biodiversity and sustainability strategy.
