Schools Development Conference

Tuesday, 27th April 2021 0930hrs – 1430hrs

The UK government has pledged an initial £1 billion for a national schools rebuilding and improvement programme which is expected to deliver 500 rebuilding projects over the next decade. The first round of schemes were recently announced, will include 50 school rebuilding projects plus 21 new free schools.

As part of this high level virtual event, delegates will hear from leadership from academy trusts, free schools, local authorities and the wider education sector on the sector expansion plans, challenges and how fellow built environment professionals can assist in delivering their projects. Department for Education – Jane Balderstone, Programme Director, School Rebuilding Division

Jane will discuss the Department for Education’s role in enabling the school rebuilding programme, how they are working with their partners to ensure the creation of schools that benefit all students and how the recently announced 50 schools are just the start of a 10-year rebuilding scheme. She has worked in a variety of roles in the Department for Education since 2007, including leadership roles in the Free Schools Building Programme. She is focussed on building strong relationships with key partners, including local authorities, academy trusts, and across government.

Ormiston Academies Trust – James Miller, National Director of Estates & Technology / Coordinator of The Trust Network

Ormiston Academies Trust is one of the largest multi-academy trusts in England, with 40 schools across six English regions responsible for the education of over 30,000 pupils. James leads on the development and maintenance of a £700m+ as well as being responsible for leading and delivering the £94m Ormiston Capital Building Programme to rebuild and refurbish eight academy buildings and build one free primary school.

James is also a director of The Trust Network, a body that represents over 250 MATs nationwide and exists to provide its membership base of school estates managers with opportunities to share best practice, exchange knowledge, and form a single voice to discuss issues with the DfE and other national agencies.

Red Kite Learning Trust – Samantha Taylor, Estates Manager

One of the UK’s leading academy trusts, Red Kite Learning Trust has a focus on education across the North of England. With 13 schools and counting Samantha will be in a great position to discuss their ever growing estate, their development and facilities management plan, and future projects.

 

 

The Learners’ Trust – Matt Freeston, Chief Executive

The Learners’ Trust manages a network of 18 geolocated schools in Derbyshire and Rotherham. Their Somerlea Park Junior School in Derbyshire has been named as one of the 50 that will be rebuilt. Matt will discuss the plans around Somerlea Park, as well as the trust’s work to ensure all their facilities empower students and provide the best possible environment for learning. He will also discuss the opportunities for working with local authorities to deliver affordable housing as they rationalise their estate.

LocatED – Lara Newman, Chief Executive

LocatED are the government property company responsible for identifying, purchasing, and delivering new school sites across the UK as well as driving efficiencies across Department for Education owned schools. Lara’s team are currently delivering 6 new mixed-use, education led regeneration schemes which will create 600 new homes and classroom places for over 3500 children. They are also about to acquire 17 new sites for school building purposes across London, the South East, the Midlands and the North. LocatED join the conference to share insight into their strategy and identify future partnership opportunities.

Vantage Academy Trust – Simon Bramwell, Chief Executive

Vantage Academy Trust is a mixed CE multi-academy trust operating 9 schools in Manchester, Bolton and Knowsley, providing an education for 3,000 students. Simon will discuss the trust’s ongoing efforts to develop a new 450 place free school in Bolton – with a site currently identified they are close to getting the project off the ground.

Premier Advisory Group – Hannah Jackson, Head of Advisory

Premier Advisory Group (PAG) is a multi-disciplinary professional services firm that specialises in education consultancy and related areas. In March 2022, it was announced by the Department for Education that PAG has been appointed as sole suppliers of free schools application support. PAG will take over from New Schools Network, which had previously provided this service for over a decade.

The Academy Transformation Trust – Gerard McGrory, Director of Estates

The Academy Transformation Trust is a group of 21 primary, secondary and post-16 academies across the Midlands, South East and East of England. They are responsible for the education of over 13,500 pupils employing more than 2,000 staff and a turnover over £80 million per year. Gerard will outline their estates strategy and continued plans for growth.

Cabot Learning Federation – Bryony Green, Director of Corporate Services / Coordinator of The Trust Network

Over the last 12 years the Cabot Learning Federation has grown to become a partnership of 21 academies across Bristol and the South West, employing 1,900 staff and serving the education needs of over 11,000 children. The federation is sponsored by the University of the West of England and Rolls Royce and participates in a range of local, regional and national networks that are designed to support the broader development of education sector. In January a new 900 place, £30 million school in Weston-super-Mare was announced – the school is expected to open in September 2023 and will become a member of the federation.

Pagabo – Dr Stuart Kings, Director

Stuart is an experienced NEC and procurement consultant who helps ensure the legal and technical compliance of all products at Sypro. He’s one of only a handful of NEC4 drafters in the country and a co-author of NEC3 and NEC4 Practical Solutions.

Anderson Acoustics – Emma Greenland, Principal Consultant and Head of Schools & Education Sector

Emma has 15 years’ multidisciplinary experience within architectural acoustic design and is recognised within the industry as an expert in the design of spaces for speech and listening within the education sector.

Emma says, “Positive acoustic consultancy begins with a ‘people first’ ergonomic approach, to fully comprehend user listening needs and aspirations for space use, management and organisation. Only then can the right acoustic performance standards be established to enable people to interact successfully, in employment, education, at leisure, in transit, at rest, and in everyday life. Working for a conscious business consultancy like Anderson Acoustics means I can continue to practice this design approach with integrity”.

Emma’s knowledge and experience has allowed her to deliver a range of projects from buildings for education, museum and event spaces, performance auditoria and offices to large infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and HS2.

Ankura – Bill Moore, Managing Director

Bill Moore is a Managing Director at Ankura and is Head of Ankuras Education Capital Delivery Team. He is a Engineer and Surveyor specialsing in programme and commercial management. He has over 25 years of experience in construction, infrastructure and property development across the public and private sector. He draws on extensive, multi-sector experience of project delivery including brown field and green field developments for School and Education facilities (including occupied sites), He has also worked on regeneration schemes, hospitals, Highways, residential and commercial facilities. Over the last decade Bill has delivered in excess of £1 Billion direct investment into new and refurbished Schools and Academies across the UK. He regularly works along side Governors, Head Teachers, Educationalists and Government Departments, leading on complex delivery of transformative investment into Education facilities.

Vita Safety – Ian Hutchings, Managing Director

Ian Hutchings is the founder and Managing Director of Vita Safety with over twenty years experience of providing health, safety and risk management advice and services to UK and Global organisations. Ian has worked extensively with clients in the education sector and across industry to deliver services such as; strategic consultancy, outsourced health and safety support, service level agreements for schools, training and leadership and organisational change support. Ian is a trustee for a multi academy trust and has a vested interest in a pragmatic and proportionate approach to the education of young people to be able to embrace a sensible approach to risk as part of learning and development.
