Vicky Rosin, Programme Director; ESOF2016, Manchester Science CityVicky Roisin Resized

Vicky Rosin is the Programme Director for ESOF 2106 which will be held for the first time in the UK in Manchester from 23-27th July. With the hosting of ESOF comes the designation European City of Science, which Vicky and the ESOF team are proud to promote.

An honours graduate of Coventry and Leicester Universities, Vicky worked in local government for almost 40 years. She headed Manchester City Council’s Commonwealth Games Unit, after which she was responsible for ensuring that the legacy of the Games was captured for the City, through the development of an integrated Marketing and Events strategy.

As the Deputy Chief Executive in Manchester, she held an extensive portfolio of responsibilities including neighbourhood, cultural and sports services. In 2009 Vicky was awarded an MBE for her services to Local Government. She retired from Local Government in 2014.


Heather Niven, Head; Science City YorkHeather Niven Resized

Heather has been working to promote business growth and innovation for 8 years in this organisation. Science City York has led and partnered in multiple EU regional development fund programmes including capital projects e.g. £19.4m Embedded Space project in partnership with University of York and revenue projects such as business mentoring. Heather has personally led ‘Innovate York’, a £330k innovation programme in the city of York, which resulted in 2 international and 4 national awards for city innovation in partnership with the local authority. She also shared good practice with 3 other EU cities through the URBACT programme including San Sebastián in Spain, Tallin in Estonia and Syracuse in Sicily.

Since becoming part of Make It York 10 months ago, Science City have partnered in two other European structural investment funded projects to grow the agri-food sector in North Yorkshire and to grow our open innovation offer in the region.

Heather was also part of the bid writing team which secured the UNESCO Media Arts designation for the city: the first UK Media Arts UNESCO city.  Part of the planned UNESCO activity will include developing a 3 week-long festival due to take place in 2018 and Science City York will play a large part in that.


Pam Waddell, Director; Birmingham Science CityPam Waddell Resized

Since 2009, Pam has directed Birmingham Science City, a broad public-private-university alliance that stimulates and promotes science and technology enabled innovation for business growth and improved quality of life. With a concentration on the West Midlands Combined Authority geography, the BSC Alliance builds a thriving innovation ecosystem; catalyses collaborative innovation activity; and acts as the independent, expert voice for innovation.

From 1993-2009 Pam worked at the University of Birmingham, interfacing between academic staff and external partners and funders for research and knowledge transfer. Previously Pam was a Science and Engineering Policy Researcher at the Royal Society in London, following a career as a research scientist in Bristol and Erlangen in Germany, and studying Physiology at Edinburgh and Bristol Universities.
