Science and Innovation Parks Development Conference – Online Re-Run

Over the course of January we are hosting a number of re-runs of our in-person events which took place at the end of 2021 – enabling those who missed the action to watch the whole event online, in addition to connecting with other delegates through our innovative online platform.

This event brought together some of the leading names in the sector to delve into a hot-topic that is on everyone’s mind – science parks and innovation hubs. This thriving sector is a hot-bed for investment and development, and the feeling at our event was this will only continue.

Arlington – Daniel Pagella, Commercial Director

Arlington have been developing buildings for complex needs since the 1970’s and are involved in a host of interesting science and business park schemes currently. Their next project is the 123,000 sq ft Refinery which will be developed alongside Waterfront at Manbré Wharf in Hammersmith. Daniel joins the event to talk about their approach to delivering high security, science focused sites and what the future holds for their development pipeline.

Edinburgh BioQuarter – Anna Stamp, Interim Programme Director

Edinburgh BioQuarter is leading in urban regeneration, future neighbourhoods and creating global destinations. Recently developing a £1bn mixed-use health innovation district project, which aims to support 20,000 people and bring in £140 million a year to the Scottish economy. Anna Stamp will be joining the session to share intel on future developments, perspective on development of urban centres and evolution of placemaking.

JLL – Dr Glenn Crocker, Senior Consultant

Glenn Crocker is an experienced CEO, company founder, non-executive director and investor in the life sciences sector. He was CEO of BioCity Group since mid-2003, shortly after it was founded, becoming Executive Chairman at the start of 2019. In April 2021 BioCity was acquired by Trinity Investment Management and a new company, We Are Pioneer Group Ltd was created, of which Glenn is a director. He has a DPhil in Immunology from Oxford University and qualified as a chartered accountant with EY, working with biotech companies in Palo Alto, California and Cambridge, UK, where he headed up the UK Biotech practice for EY.

At the end of 2018 he joined JLL to lead the firm’s national life science practice, focused on advising property investors, developers and corporates on the strategic opportunities within the sector. He remains a senior independent consultant with JLL.

He is a director of the UK Science Parks Association and a non-executive director of BDD, BioAscent and Alderley Park Ventures and a governor of Trent College.

In 2014 Glenn received an MBE for services to the biotechnology industry.

Bidwells – Emily Slupek, Partner

Emily Slupek is a Partner at Bidwells, working in the Building Consultancy team, with a focus on the science and tech research sector. Currently, she is working with Harwell Campus to deliver their first life sciences building at its Innovation Quarter. Prior to joining Bidwells, Emily spearheaded Buro Four’s Science & Technology division, helping clients to deliver complex projects. Emily was project lead on two schemes at Cambridge BioMedical Campus, as well as project director for the construction of two new laboratory buildings at Begbroke Science Park in Oxford. She also has experience in leading repurposing projects, as well as working with developers and funders to deliver large commercial offices and mixed-use developments. With significant experience across science and tech development, Emily is a recognised figure within the innovation sector, regularly moderating panels and chairing round table discussions to explore future trends within the sector.

Harwell Science and Innovation Campus – David Williams, Commercial Director

The Harwell Science and Innovation Campus is undergoing a significant expansion, with aims to make room for thousands more to join their innovation community through the development of cutting edge workspace, new labs and world-leading facilities. The campus are planning to add 1.5m sq ft of commercial space, new homes, hotel and amenities by 2027, as the next step of their wider 5m sq ft campus Masterplan.

ID Manchester – Lou Cordwell OBE, Director

The strategic regeneration framework for ID Manchester has recently been put forward to Manchester City Council, outlining the future of the trailblazing £1.7bn city centre district by its joint venture (JV) partners, Bruntwood SciTech and The University of Manchester. The framework sets out the vision for ID Manchester to be recognised internationally as one of the world’s leading applied innovation districts providing unique access to disruptive technologies and ideas. The completed development is set to create over 10,000 new jobs and deliver education, apprenticeship and training opportunities for local communities. The illustrative masterplan totals over 4 million sq ft, with the potential to accommodate over 2 million sq ft of commercial and retail space, and over 1,500 homes. Lou is one of the leaders behind the proposals at ID Manchester and will join the conference to discuss the vision for the new innovation district.

Lincoln Science and Innovation Park – Tom Blount, Director

Lincoln Science Park is undertaking early-stage planning for four new major capital projects which will evolve their already highly successful ecosystem. Tom joins the event to detail the future of his park and their priority growth areas in the coming five years.

University of Southampton Science Park – Jane Holt, Director

Bolstered by regional support from the council and an ambitious senior management team at the University of Southampton, Jane and her team are leading University of Southampton Science Park through an exciting period of growth. The latest development is an engineering centre. The state-of-the-art building will provide specialist laboratory facilities that will support a range of sectors such as eco-hydraulics, electronics, transport research, aerospace, energy, unmanned systems and a number of hydraulic flumes. Jane joins the event to talk about future plans and the wider role the park plays in economic growth.

Bruntwood SciTech – Tom Renn, Managing Director

Bruntwood are market leaders in the development of science and innovation property and places with world leading developments in both Manchester and West Midlands. Their next project is the £210m Health Innovation Campus in the Birmingham and they have recently invested £46m into Melbourn Science Park in Cambridge whereby they will work alongside Legal and General to develop a new masterplan for the 16.4 acre site.

Newcastle City Council – Lynne Davies, Health and Life Science Lead

As a city, Newcastle is targeting economic growth through developing life science and innovation related schemes. With several sites ready to be brought forward. Lynne joins the event to deliver exclusive insight on their ambitions and detail potential collaboration opportunities for the built environment ecosystem.

Mission Street – Artem Korolev, Managing Director

Mission Street are a specialist investor, operator and developer focused on the delivery of creative solutions for the Science and Innovation sector. They have a rapidly growing development portfolio, with in excess of 1,000,000 sq ft of committed projects in strategic locations within Oxford, Cambridge and Bristol. They recently announced a £100m innovation and R&D facility in Oxford which aims to ‘put science on show’ and integrate in to wider placemaking projects.

3PM – Suzannah Howson, Partner

3PM are Project, Programme and Portfolio Managers, they manage the lifecycle of projects of varied complexities, across all stages and throughout many sectors. 3PM’s Partners have extensive experience in the commercial and science sectors of the property industry and are leading professionals in the science environment. They are working on the following Science Parks in the UK, Wellcome Genome Campus, Stevenage Bio-Campus / GSK Stevenage, Oxford Science Park, Cambridge Science Park, Discovery Park, Pirbright Institute to name a few. They have written leading research papers for the BCO ‘The future of business parks’ and have a new paper coming out in September entitled ‘Who is the Science Tenant?’. They are working with some of the leading scientists in the country and are using their extensive expertise to help change the future of project management.

 

Barts Life Sciences – Grant Bourhill, Chief Executive

Barts Life Sciences is a joint venture between Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London which have come together to help accelerate the latest healthcare innovations from bench to bedside. Their vision is to deliver a new life science campus totalling up to 2 million sq ft that will provide a space for researchers, scientists and clinicians to work directly alongside businesses and entrepreneurs, creating the healthcare solutions of tomorrow. The new development will create up to 11,500 full-time jobs and will be a powerful incentive for attracting new start-ups and other innovative and dynamic enterprises. Revenue will be reinvested back into local healthcare, securing clinical and financial sustainability.

Arcadis – Nora Taylor, Places Client Development Director

Nora is the UK Client Development Director for the Arcadis ‘Places’ business line and has a strong understanding of the life sciences sector. In her Client Development Director role, Nora is accountable for business development in our commercial development, Education Science & Health and Technology sectors and the future of science parks is a priority area for her

Sci-Tech Daresbury – John Leake, Business Growth Director

As well as being on the senior leadership team at UKSPA, John sits on the Cheshire & Warrington LEP Science & Innovation Strategy Board and the Liverpool City Region LEP Digital & Creative Sector, and Investment Boards with the aim of helping each region develop science and innovation related schemes. His day to day role includes handling business development matters for Sci-Tech Daresbury which means he can deliver a full market perspective on future challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

Rothamsted Enterprises – Nicole Sadd, CEO

Rothamsted Research, the longest running agricultural research station in the world, has provided cutting-edge science and innovation for nearly 170 years. Its mission is to deliver the knowledge and new practices to increase crop productivity and quality and to develop environmentally sustainable solutions for food and energy production. With nearly two centuries of staying power in an ever expanding market, Nicole and her team are constantly evolving their campus to meet the needs of tomorrow’s organisations.

Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park – Paul Watson, Head of Property Office

Paul is overseeing the team that will deliver a new 180-acre extension to Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park and will join the event to talk about the scheme and its wider impact on the regional economy, the high technology jobs it will create and how it factors in to Loughborough University’s bigger campus vision.

Thomas White Oxford – William Donger, Managing Director

Oxford North by Thomas White Oxford- the development company of St John’s College- is the new £500m life sciences district for Oxford which will include 936,500 sq ft of new laboratories and workspaces for biomedical science, 480 new and affordable homes, public parks and neighbourhood shops, to retain and attract global science research talent and help boost the local and national economy. The 64 acre masterplan will create 4500 new jobs and is to be delivered over numerous phases. As one of the biggest regeneration projects in the UK, William joins the event to unveil all about this momentous scheme

Built Environment Networking – Amanda Griffiths, Director

Amanda is one of the Co-Founder’s of Built Environment Networking – formed almost 10 years ago.

She’ll be hosting throughout the day, running the days proceedings and managing the interaction between our delegates and the speakers.

Dardan Security – Guy Mathias, Strategic Adviser

Guy Mathias is a subject matter expert on Extremism. He directed counter extremist operations for the Research & Pharmaceutical sector during an unprecedented period of violence & intimidation. He has lectured on the threat of Extremism to academia, Police & UK Government bodies. A former Chair of the UK Pharmaceutical Industry Security Forum, Guy is currently Chair of The Security Commonwealth and in July 2020 was appointed by the Security Industry Authority’s Strategic Forum.

Allen is a Partner at CPC Project Services, one of the leading project and cost management consultancies.  He is leading the delivery of multiple projects within the life sciences sector.  With a background in cost management, Allen has over 20 years’ experience in delivering successful schemes by ensuring they have the right cost envelope from the outset and are driving value throughout the design development and procurement phases.  Working with Universities, pharmaceutical conglomerates, institutions, business parks, investors and developers, CPC is at the forefront of project managing today’s life sciences buildings.  Allen is currently part of a consortium of industry leaders developing an online tool to help the UK deliver on its life sciences ambitions by defining the parameters for successful Life Sciences buildings.

Jude Harris is a Director at Jestico + Whiles architects. He has led multi-disciplinary teams on numerous award-winning science and education projects, including the new Cavendish Laboratory for the University of Cambridge.
