South Yorkshire Development Conference

We’re set to have a plethora of expert names join us for four excellent panel discussions. The speakers include:

Peel L&P – Neal Biddle, Development Director

Peel L&P have massive plans for South Yorkshire with their £1.7bn GatewayEast development, which is expected to boost the region’s economy by £6.5bn within 15 years, creating 35,000 jobs across the region and up to 3,000 new homes across GatewayEast. Within this scheme recent planning permission has gone in for an advance manufacturing and logistics ‘Innovation quarter’ as well as plans for ‘Central Plaza’ – a major mixed-use development of retail, leisure, food and drink, community and health space and new homes with the potential to create more than 1,100 jobs. As Development Director for the scheme, Neal will be on hand to discuss these plans as well as Peel’s other activity in South Yorkshire including the recently announced former steelworks site just off the M1.

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council – Kathy McArdle, Service Director for Regeneration and Culture

In partnership with developers and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) the council are investing in Barnsley and creating development opportunities which will enhance employment aspirations in the borough. Their jobs and business plan aims to create 39,000 jobs and attract 1600 new businesses to Barnsley by 2033. The plan has five main themes: investing in infrastructure, attracting inward investment, improving the town centre, growing existing businesses and encouraging higher productivity start-ups. As Director for Regeneration at the council, Kathy will be well placed to discuss their investment in infrastructure, town centre regeneration and housing and will be on hand to talk about their pipeline of work.

Queensberry – Andrew Davison, Project Director

Andrew will join the conference to update on Queensberry’s £470m ‘Heart of the City’ project in Sheffield. The project will see 1.5 million sq ft of individually designed and repurposed buildings surrounded by enlivened streets and public spaces which incorporate new retail, F&B, leisure, residential, commercial and a new hotel – it’s the UK’s largest local authority financed regeneration plan. Truly mixed use and intelligently phased over time it is a shining example of a collaborative private/public sector partnership, it is a blueprint for 21st century urban renewal: sustainable architecture and repurposed buildings surrounded by enlivened streets and distinctive public spaces. Queensberry also recently completed ‘the glass works’ in Barnsley and Andrew will discuss their future ambitions in South Yorkshire.

Johnnie Johnson Housing – Lin Powell, Director of Development

JJ Housing have a portfolio of around 5,000 properties across the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Derbyshire and are committed to building another 1,000 over the coming years. The housing association have just started expanding into South Yorkshire and Lin will be on hand to discuss their ambitions to develop across the region.

Harworth Group – Andrew Blackshaw, Chief Operating Officer

Harworth Group is a leading land and property regeneration company in the UK headquartered in Rotherham and one of south Yorkshire’s biggest investors, owning and managing over 15,000 acres on approximately 100 sites in the North of England and the Midlands. The group has a wide array of major projects in the pipeline, securing planning consents for 9,355 residential plots and over 9 million sq ft of commercial space. Schemes in South Yorkshire include, the Gateway 36 development near Barnsley, a 1.1 million sq ft development which could support the creation of up to 2,500 jobs in the region. As Chief Operating Officer for Harworth, Andrew will be well placed to discus their ongoing commitment and investment in South Yorkshire and the wider North of England.

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce – Louisa Harrison-Walker, Executive Director

Louisa is the founder of an award winning Sheffield based organisation, is the Chair of The Sheffield City Growth Board – the private sector board working alongside Sheffield City Council to support and promote economic development in the City – and is the Regional Chair for Leadership Development Organisation Common Purpose, a global leadership organization devoted to developing leaders who can cross boundaries, both at work and in society. Louisa will join the session to discuss the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce’s plans to continue the post-pandemic fightback for local businesses and encourage inclusive economic growth to create a prosperous Sheffield and South Yorkshire region.

Great Places Housing – Nick Gornall, Director of Development

Great Places Housing Group are one of the North’s leading social housing providers with over 24,000 homes across the North West and Yorkshire. They have ambitious plans to deliver 11,000 new homes by 2030, across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Yorkshire. These will be delivered by a variety of means – with their long term relationship with Homes England and through the Bloc and Innovation Chain North West partnerships as well as their private sector development arm, Cube Great Places. Nick will be on hand to discuss their significant future plans in South Yorkshire, where they are set to deliver c.800 new homes over the coming years.

Capital & Centric – Tim Heatley, Co-Founder

Capital & Centric are ‘re-writing the rules on town centre living’ with their latest plans in Bolton. C&C are planning to create “Neighbourhood Bolton” and are bringing forward plans for the first few areas on 6.2 acres of brownfield sites in and around Bradshawgate. Neighbourhood Bolton is set to regenerate the area around the town’s train and bus stations with the aim of being a catalyst that kick-starts wider regeneration of the whole area. Tim is leading on C&C’s ambitions and will join the conference to outline this scheme as well as the positive progress they’ve been making on their schemes in Wigan, Stockport, and Manchester.

Sheffield City Council – Tammy Whitaker, Head of Regeneration and Property

An ambitious new vision has been revealed for Sheffield city centre looking beyond the development work already underway to transform this area, including the £470m Heart of the City scheme – which developers are actively being sought for – as well as funding secured to revitalise the high street and Castlegate through the Future High Streets Fund and the council’s successful bid to the Levelling Up Fund. It includes plans to create five new distinctive neighbourhoods with high quality housing in Neepsend, Wicker Riverside, Castlegate, the Moor and Furnace Hill. More than 20,000 new homes would be created, relieving pressure on greenfield sites, and helping to meet housing demands for Sheffield’s growing population and Tammy will be on hand to discuss these exciting plans.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council – Paul Woodcock, Strategic Director for Regeneration and Environment

Paul will join the conference to give an update on the regeneration of Rotherham High Street with the latest segment of the plans including town centre residential development. The plans form part of the Town Centre Masterplan which includes £30m plus funding for three major housing developments at Wellgate, Westgate and Sheffield Road, as well as improvements to open spaces across College Street, Bridgegate, Howard Street and Effingham Street. Paul will share more intel on these schemes as well as discussing the first six schemes to receive funding from the Towns and Villages improvement package.

Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park – Richard Caborn, Chair

Major new health care, regeneration and sporting projects totalling more than £200m have been unveiled for Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park with the flagship developments set to include a National Centre for Child Health Technology and a ground-breaking diagnostic imaging research hub. Richard will give more intel on the forward investment Master Plan which could generate over 5,600 jobs will also ensure the Park will play a major role in the post-pandemic and post-Brexit economy of South Yorkshire.

Built Environment Networking – Amanda Griffiths, Director

Amanda is one of the Co-Founder’s of Built Environment Networking – formed almost 10 years ago.

Sheffield Hallam University – Toby Ward, Head of Estates Development and Projects

Sheffield Hallam have revealed plans for three new buildings in the city centre of Sheffield, the latest in their quest to become the “world’s leading applied university.” The new campus will be “zero carbon ready” by using the latest technology and measures as well as 4,300 sq ft of green space. As Head of Estates Development, Toby will be well placed to reveal intel on this new campus, its zero carbon credentials and discuss the university’s role in creating a healthier, greener South Yorkshire.
