Prof. Mike Wilkinson, Deputy Vice Chancellor; Southampton Solent UniversityMike Wilkinson resized

Mike joined Southampton Solent University as deputy vice-chancellor in August 2010, and is professor of international education. He is responsible for student recruitment; international matters; marketing; reputation partnerships; and Solent Sport. Mike is a member of the Southampton Business Board of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce. He is also a trustee of Solent Sport in the Community and of the Southampton Cultural Development Trust. Mike is a chartered director and a fellow of the Institute of Directors. He is currently working on projects to further enhance the interaction of the University with business, education and voluntary organisations.

Mike is a visiting professor at the National Academy of Education Administration, Beijing, China and also at the Shanghai Institute of Design. His research interests include widening participation in higher education, strategy and leadership, particularly with an international dimension. Mike is an experienced governor in further education.

Mike was previously pro vice-chancellor at London South Bank University where he established strategic collaborations with several leading universities. These included founding the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine, London, and the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings, both of which he chaired. He was formerly a board member of local strategic partnerships in two London boroughs and of the South Bank Employers’ Group.

Prior to returning to the sector in 2003, Mike worked for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) – a global chemical company – for 22 years in leadership roles in research and development, marketing, export and licensing, strategic planning, logistics and business management. This included extensive international work in Asia Pacific, America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa and secondments to live in Germany (four years) and France (two years), where he operated through the German and French languages. He worked with the steel, aluminium, domestic appliance and building sectors as customers, and researched, developed and launched innovative, patented products into the market place. He has worked in the business-to-business and business-to-consumer sectors and has lengthy experience with household international brand names.

Mike studied at the University of Cambridge (Trinity College) obtaining an MA degree in natural sciences, followed by a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry.


Denise Edghill, Head of Economy & Skills; Southampton City CouncilDenise Edghill resized

Denise Edghill has significant experience across the public, private and voluntary sectors, primarily in roles to increase economic growth and social inclusion.

She holds an honours degree in History and Politics, Membership of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development, and a Masters Degree in Education.

Her previous roles have been diverse, ranging from voluntary sector programme management in London to running a commercial art gallery in Marlborough. Her public sector positions have included developing and delivering skills and employment programmes across many sectors at a local and regional level, often contributing to national policy development. Denise is employment and skills advisor to the Local Government Association, she programme managed the Southampton and Portsmouth City Deal with government (involving capital infrastructure, business growth, employment and skills delivery) and she chairs the annual South Coast Business Awards. More recently, she was responsible for Children’s Services Commissioning at Southampton City Council, before her current post as Head of Economic Development and Skills.


Guy Wells, Development Manager; HammersonGuy Wells Resized

Guy Wells is a Chartered Surveyor with extensive knowledge in industrial, distribution, office, leisure and retail property, construction and development.

Guy holds a Honours Degree in Surveying, a Masters in Investment and is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Guy joined Hammerson in 2007 and led the development of Hammerson’s award-winning Union Square Shopping Centre in Aberdeen.   Following this, Guy led Hammerson’s development extensions at The Bullring, Birmingham, Silverburn Shopping Centre, Glasgow and more recently the catering and leisure development Watermark WestQuay in Southampton.

Prior to Hammerson, Guy worked for a number of years at Stannifer Developments, a private retail developer and before that AXA.

Guy studied at Southbank University as well as at Cass Business School and is a member of the British Council of Shopping Centres, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Investment Property Forum.


Simon Pollitt, Head of UK Property; The Student Housing CompanySimon Pollitt resized

Simon’s most recent position was Development Manager at The O’Flynn Group, which he held for 3 years before joining Bob Crompton at Knightsbridge Student Housing Ltd. As a Development Manager at the O’Flynn Group, Simon shared his time between Tiger Developments, a commercial and residential Developer, and Victoria Hall, a specialist Student Accommodation owner operator.

Prior to this role, he spent 5 years at Countryside Properties, three of which were on their Management Graduate Scheme. As his position at Countryside Properties developed, Simon was involved in a number of joint ventures with both Land Securities and Moat Housing in North Kent, as well as acquiring a number of smaller sites for the group. Simon has been a member of Planning and Development Faculty of the RICS since 2006.
