Water Sector Capital Investment & Development Conference; In association with Costain

Monday, 6th June 2022 0930hrs – 1300hrs

The water sector is currently halfway through its seventh five-year AMP (Asset Management Plan), valued at approximately £51bn with a 50:50 split between capital and operational investment. Join us to hear from sector leadership on the investment priorities throughout the UK.

Since privatisation in 1989, the water sector has invested close to £140bn in its capital assets through planned and controlled five-year investment programmes. The current five-year programme is known as AMP7 and sets out investment priorities from 2020 to 2025. Under AMP7, several key areas will receive significant investment including: £469m to address long-term drought challenges, over £1bn to help with flood protection, improving more than 12,000km of river and reducing pollution incidents by 30%. During this conference, we will bring together the UK’s water sector leadership to share insight into the latest schemes and initiatives to continue improving the nation’s water services.

Topics to be discussed:

  • Scottish Water’s Investment Priorities from 2022 onwards
  • UK Gov’s National Underground Assets Register Pilot
  • £105m, 54km Tees Pipeline Project
  • Anglian Water’s £400m Strategic Pipeline Programme
  • NWG’s £150m Constructions and Engineering Framework
  • And much more…

British Water – Lila Thompson, Chief Executive

British Water is an association that has a wide and varied membership across the water industry. The association represents the interests of water and wastewater supply chain companies. Playing a key role in connecting them to contacts to raise their profile, help them grow their business and promote best practice in the water industry. British Water also lobbies governments and regulators on behalf of its members and provides vital information on UK and international water and wastewater markets. Lila joins us to share her thoughts on the future of the UK water sector and what her member’s investment priorities are from 2022 and beyond.

Northumbria Water Group – Clive Surman-Wells, Innovation Partnerships Manager

Clive joins us to share insight into NWG’s pioneering national underground assets register (NUAR) innovation project. The project has been developed in conjunction with the Government’s Geospatial Commission with the aim of building a secure and trusted digital sharing platform for all the pipes and cables under the ground. The estimated economic cost of accidental strikes on underground pipes and cables is £1.2bn a year and workers are often put at risk of serious injury. The NWG NUAR project is one of two pilots with the other being delivered by the GLA.

Water Industry Commission Scotland – Michelle Ashford, Chief Operating Officer

The Scottish water and sewerage sector is a £1.2bn industry that improves infrastructure, creates jobs and supports livelihoods across Scotland. Water Industry Commission Scotland acts as the economic regulator of Scottish Water, ensuring that Scottish Water has the funding it needs to deliver high-quality services. WICS also plays a key role in the Scottish Government’s Hydro Nation initiative that develops international partnerships, sharing knowledge and undertaking join research.

Anglian Water Services Ltd – James Crompton, Strategic Pipeline Alliance Director

Anglian Water Services are investing heavily in one of the largest pipeline infrastructure projects in the UK. Once complete, the £400m programme will develop a new network longer than any UK motorway. The programme forms a key part of Anglian Water’s Water Resources Management Plan, which sets out how they will manage their regional water supplies to meet current and future demand over 25 years. The project began in 2021 and is predicted to be completed by 2026. James is the Strategic Pipeline Alliance Director and joins us to discuss the programme and touch on other key areas of investment.

Northumbrian Water Group – Dr Angela MacOscar, Head of Innovation

Northumbria Water Group are one of the UK’s leading water suppliers, providing water and sewage services to over 3.5 million people across the UK. Last year, as a part of AMP7, Northumbria Water selected partners for a four-year framework contract worth up to £150m for construction and engineering works on its water and wastewater assets. The water group also announced their plans for a new £105m Tees Pipeline late last year, that when completed, will span 54km. NWG are also taking part in a multi-million pound project in Northumberland that will improve the ecological condition of more than 49,000 hectacres of habitat and water quality for the species that depend on them. Dr Angela MacOscar is Head of Innovation at Northumbrian Water, managing the innovation pipeline for the organisation.
