York and North Yorkshire Development Plans

North Yorkshire will become a hub of investment and growth over the coming decade, with a number of town centres in line for their biggest investment in decades. This comes in addition to billions worth of major projects in the region set to unfold over the coming years, with a £1.1bn valuation of the York Central Scheme alone.

From new hospitals and infrastructure works to major housing developments and project Gigabit, York and North Yorkshire is set for a wave of innovation, redevelopment and growth in the near future. As a part of this event, we will be hearing from the region’s leadership as they set out their strategies for economic recovery and detail the opportunities available for further development and regeneration, whilst addressing key national issues including sustainability, inward investment and improving connectivity.

Hambleton District Council – Hannah Heinemann, Head of Service – Commercial and Programme Management

Hambleton District Council have recently given planning approval to Avant Homes to deliver a 154-home scheme in Easingwold. The council are also looking to create over 700 jobs with a farmland redevelopment in Northallerton, the project will see the delivery of a 21-acre development featuring commercial and industrial units. This comes almost a year after the council completed their £17m mixed-use Treadmills scheme. The scheme was delivered by the council alongside their joint venture partners Wykeland Group.

Selby District Council – Julian Rudd, Head of Economic Development and Regeneration

Selby is one of three North Yorkshire town centres in line to receive the region’s biggest investment in decades. The Selby town centre will receive a share of a £42m package aimed at increasing productivity in the area. This comes in addition to several major schemes set to unfold across the Selby District, including a 149 acre scheme in Kellingley, the proposed 125 acre redevelopment of the former Eggborough Power Station, and the 75 acre Sherburn2 logistics scheme.

Harrogate Council – Kathryn Daly, Head of Place Shaping & Economic Growth

As a part of the Government’s £42m North Yorkshire Package, Harrogate’s town centre is one of three North Yorkshire towns set for a regeneration overhaul over the coming years. This comes with the Harrogate Gateway plan to regenerate Station Parade and create a new public transport hub for the town. The council are also in early planning stages of a huge development to in West Harrogate that would include 2,000 homes as well as improvements to highways and infrastructure.

Helmsley Group is a property investment and development group that specialises in residential and commercial property. They have a wide array of schemes underway across North Yorkshire with a focus on the city of York, with their 114-apartment Westgate scheme, the largest in York. Helmsley Group also have a 50-apartment scheme at Dixons Yard and a 24-apartment scheme at Merchants Exchange.

With the challenges posed by the pandemic and the importance of levelling-up, York has a series of unique opportunities that can see the city go from strength to strength. City of York Council is working with partners to drive this work, including making the 2,500-home York Central a reality.  More recently, following the announcement of devolution negotiations for York and North Yorkshire, the right deal could unlock significant investment in York and the wider region over the next 30 years.

HBD are one of the most active private sector developers in the North Yorkshire region. They are currently developing a £107m scheme on the site of the former Terry’s chocolate HQ. Aptly titled, The Chocolate Works, the scheme will see the delivery of 163 individually designed apartments where the main multi-storey factory once was, as well as 22 bespoke apartments within The Clock Tower building. The Chocolate Works will also include a new brain surgery hospital creating 145 healthcare jobs, and retaining a vital health service in the city following the closure of The Retreat.
