NHS Property Services – Adrian Powell, Development and Planning Director

Adrian is Development and Planning Director at NHS Property Services, where he leads an in-house multidisciplinary development and planning team. The team work to deliver quality healthcare environments and realise latent potential from the NHSPS Estate in the course of implementing a co-ordinated strategy of improvement and renewal of the portfolio providing clinical services. Having recently published the “Delivering a Green NHS” plan which will see billions of pounds spent on retrofitting and upgrading 3000 NHS properties nationwide, Adrian is also hoping to transform vacant and underutilised space on the NHS estate into affordable or free-of-charge facilities for community groups and transition company fleet to ultra-low emissions vehicles and develop an electric vehicle strategy for eventual fleet transition.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust – Peter Ward, Director of Real Estate Development

Guys and St Thomas’ Foundation, along with the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark and Kings Health Partners are creating the SC1 life science innovation district. The project will create a globally renowned quarter of high impact health innovation which will create a range of opportunities for the local community through the co-location of healthcare, research and development. The partnership is moving forward with the “Snowsfields Quarter” – a £350m, 300,000sq ft life sciences hub being developed alongside Reef Group and Oxford Properties which will play a central role in creating the required, and highly technical, real estate infrastructure to support the emergence of the SC1 innovation cluster. Peter will discuss how the partnership will develop innovation that meets local needs, bring employment and investment into the surrounding community and put health innovation at the heart of Lambeth and Southwark.

NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board – Jacqui Bunce, Programme Director – Strategic Estates, Partnerships and Planning

Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board brings together three NHS Trusts, the county and district councils and 85 GP practices alongside other key partners and exists to improve population health, tackle health inequalities, enhance productivity and help the NHS support broader social and economic development for a population of 770,000. The ICB is planning to develop a pioneering health and wellbeing centre in Sleaford – one of six NHS England sponsored projects. Jacqui works to bring together these organisations to integrate health priorities into planning for growth, Towns Fund work and development projects to improve health outcomes. She will discuss how they are placing a ‘golden thread’ of health determinants to ensure investment and development is focused on working to improve health outcomes for the county’s residents.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust – Matthew Tulley, Redevelopment Programme Director

Imperial College NHS Trust are one of the country’s largest NHS Trusts and have plans to redevelop a large part of their ageing estate. A full redevelopment of St Mary’s Hospital is planned, requiring £1.2-1.7 billion of investment for the creation of 840 beds and a clinical life science cluster. Major refurbishment and rebuilding projects are also being planned for Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals, with all three projects estimated to start from 2025 onwards.

APPG for Health – Peter Dowd MP, Co-Chair

Prior to becoming MP for Bootle in 2015 Peter worked in health and social care in Merseyside for over 35 years and is a qualified social worker as well as a former chair of a primary care NHS trust. As part of the APPG for Health Peter is a passionate campaigner for healthcare investment.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust – Roberta Fuller, Head of Hospital Reconfiguration

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust are planning to develop a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Truro, to bring all women’s and children’s services in one building. The project is being funded by £100 million from the DHSC and will feature Maternity, Neonatal and Paediatric care; Obstetrics and Gynaecology facilities including operating theatres and an intensive care unit.

Therme Group – James Mark, Chief Operating Officer

Therme Group aims to combine destination resorts with healthy lifestyle choices and ultimately take the burden of avoidable injuries and illnesses off the shoulders of the NHS and private healthcare providers. To achieve this, the group will be delivering multiple new resorts in the UK over the next ten years with a total capital investment of c.£2 billion. James and his team’s mission is to have a development within 90 minutes travel time of anyone in the UK and he joins the event to speak about their plans and the wider benefits of creating healthy places.

Local Partnerships – Jenny Coombs, Senior Director Place

Local Partnerships is jointly owned by jointly owned by HM Treasury, the Local Government Association and the Welsh Government. Jenny is Programme Director for Local Partnerships’ Health & Social Care team. She has supported the Welsh Government with their Integrated Care Fund which integrates health and housing by supporting accommodation-led projects that can deliver savings or other beneficial outcomes for health and social care. She is also working with several clients, the LGA and the One Public Estate programme to develop whole-system business cases across multi-agency partnerships.

Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – Jason Seez, Deputy Chief Executive & Director of Strategy

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are moving forward with plans for a new hospital and recently submitted a planning application to Hillingdon Council. The new hospital will cover 900,000 sq ft, a 40% increase on the current provision and will incorporate greater patient privacy, greater flexibility and incorporation of new technologies. The projects will also support the integration of care and wellbeing across North West London and is progressing in consultation with a range of stakeholders including the local authority, ICS, GPs and the third sector.

Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust & Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust – Janet Smith, Joint Head of Sustainability

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust has been awarded £32.9 million as part of Phase 2a of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, to carry out major decarbonisation work at Cannock Chase and New Cross Hospitals. The trust is a leader in sustainable healthcare provision with a project currently underway which will see them become the first in England to operate their own solar facility, leading to savings of over £1 million annually.

NHS England – Dr Owen Landeg, Senior Net Zero Delivery Lead

Dr Owen Landeg is the Senior Net Zero Delivery Lead at NHS England and is working to help the NHS achieve it’s aim of becoming the world’s first net zero national health service – with zero carbon from direct emissions to be reached by 2040. All 212 NHS Trusts, covering over 1,000 hospitals and health facilities now have green plans in place, which will save 1 million tonnes of carbon over the next three years. Dr Landeg will discuss the investment that is required to reach this target and the collaboration between public and private sector that will be needed

Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – Michelle Humphreys, Director of Strategic Projects

Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are moving forward with two transformative regeneration projects which will see major new facilities developed at North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) and Wythenshawe Hospital. The £600m NMGH project will create a replacement acute hospital and a mental health hospital as well as significant new key worker and social housing and wellbeing and education hubs. The Wythenshawe hospital project is at an earlier stage and will see a new sustainable health village developed over the next 10-15 years.

Impact Healthcare REIT – Simon Gould, Development Director

Impact Health REIT are a leading healthcare focused real estate investment trust with a portfolio worth over £460 million and 4,274 registered beds. They are in advanced negotiations to acquire six portfolios, consisting of 27 separate care homes, for a total of £169m. Simon is a noted expert in healthcare property sustainability, and will discuss Impact Health’s robust approach to decarbonisation and the work they are planning to achieve net-zero across their portfolio.

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust – Shaun Jackson, Director of Estates

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust a world leader in women’s and paediatric healthcare and caters for 641,000 patient visits per year. They have been awarded £53 million from Phase 3a of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which will be used to reduce emissions at both Hospitals that make up the Trust’s estate. Shaun will discuss how the funding will be utilised and how they are looking to work with partners to achieve net zero.

Jacobs – Suzanne Lopes, Vice President and Head of Cities & Places, Major Projects and Programmes, Europe

With over 25 years of local, regional and global experience in construction, architecture, project and programme management, Suzanne has held senior roles on some of the world’s largest urban development programmes, such as London 2012 Olympics, Qatar 2022 World Cup and most recently led the technical and design Programme Management team on the hugely successful Expo 2020 in Dubai. Suzanne is now bringing her extensive built environment and programme experience to the UK and Europe Built Environment market, looking at areas where Jacobs can challenge today and reinvent tomorrow and improve the cities in which we work, live and play.

Kajima – Richard Coe, Project Director

Kajima are a developer and investor focused on shaping places around the needs of those who will live, work or benefit from them work with NHS trusts and other partners to bring forward projects that put healthcare at the heart of community and inclusive place. The £500m Newcastle Centre for Ageing and Vitality project will transform the former Newcastle General Hospital into a site integrating research, living, workspace and health uses to create a world-leading destination. At the Springfield Village development in South West London they are part of a JV delivering mental health facilities alongside 800+ homes and leisure and retail and infrastructure.

Matthew is a chartered UK and French registered architect who leads Jacobs’ Global Health infrastructure business. After completing his professional training in the UK, he worked in France for 10 years on a range of healthcare projects across Europe and North Africa. With the completion of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Clermont-Ferrand in 2011, he relocated to Australia where he has been instrumental in leading Jacobs’ health advisory and design teams over a wide range of health projects across the world. His more recent work includes new facilities supporting the delivery of health services in rural locations across Australia, New Zealand and Kiribati, through to the planning and design of major tertiary facilities such as the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide and the Alexandra Hospital in Singapore.
