Building Equality is an alliance of construction consultants, engineers, developers, contractors, and institutions who are passionate about working together and harnessing our collective power to drive LGBT+ inclusion in the construction industry – and today they’re calling for the industry to come out in support of trans rights.

Open Letter from Building Equality:

We are disappointed by the long-delayed announcement of the Gender Recognition Act reforms.

Despite there being overwhelming support, the UK Government has fallen short on its promise to our trans, non-binary and gender non-confirming community. However, Building Equality will continue to stand with our trans community and we’ll continue to make construction, engineering and the built environment a wholly welcoming, inclusive and supportive place for trans people.

We urge your organisation to stand up for your trans employees, customers and colleagues and their rights – acknowledging that trans rights are human rights.

We ask that you come out for trans equality.

We ask that you share this letter with your internal EDI team, with your internal employee networks and senior leadership. We’re asking your organisation to sign the Trans Rights Are Humans Rights Pledge and to visibly and vocally highlight your support for trans inclusion. Our industry can still be a hostile environment for LGBT+ and particularly our trans employees – with two thirds of LGBT+ people feeling that their sexuality or gender identity creates barriers for career progression and where a third have experienced offensive or inappropriate comments about their sexuality or gender identity.

We hope that you will join us in speaking out against oppression. We need the entire industry to send a powerful message to our trans community – that you support them and they are welcome. Please join us and sign-up to pledge here: https://www.transrightsarehumanrights.co.uk/
