The Government have revealed nine reasons why HS2 will unlock huge development and regeneration projects within the region – and why it’ll be the driver for economic growth within West Yorkshire.

We’re set to hear from regional authorities and HS2 Ltd who’re crucial in maximising the opportunities at the HS2 Economic Growth Conference later this year – where a thousand delegates, 45 exhibitors and 70 speakers will come together. But now the Government has shared their view on the schemes impact on Leeds following the news yesterday that the rolling stock depot which will clean, maintain and house HS2 trains will be located in Leeds.

The HS2 project is already gaining huge momentum, especially in London and the West Midlands where hubs will be positioned at Euston, Old Oak and Park Royal, Solihull and Birmingham. The rail network will then extend through the Midlands to Crewe and Manchester in the West and through Toton, Sheffield and Leeds to the East – all set to be delivered by 2033.

The Department for London has now published nine promises on what HS2 will deliver for Leeds:

  • A modern train station. Early designs have already been released of the ambitious style of the new HS2 Leeds station – which is already the busiest in the North. The plans will look to ease congestion, whilst also enabling huge regeneration and development around the station.
  • A brilliant South Bank. This area of Leeds is heavily talked about. At the moment the area is partly derelict or under-used and we’re already seeing development activity kickstart in the South Bank – and with the plans by Vastint and more it will be continuing, all it’s all being driven by HS2. The area is set to be reshaped into a vibrant new area and will help double the size of Leeds city centre whilst bringing urban areas closer to the city.
  • Thousands of new jobs. Regeneration and development will bring thousands of job opportunities to the region. Through new office space to leisure facilities. New restaurants, hotels and bars. And all of the building will ensure a huge influx of construction workers to the region. Digital, creative, arts, finance and new businesses are set to be some of the key drivers in those jobs.
  • New homes. Thousands of new jobs means the need for available housing across the region, and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority will be looking to accelerate the development of housing in the region compares to previous years, whilst ensuring they provide strong community feeling, inclusive neighbourhoods and with the right amount of affordable builds.
  • More apprenticeships. Skilled workers are essential to a thriving economy – and with a noticeable shortfall in growth areas and the creation of new sectors in high-value areas it’s set to be a big focus. 2,000 new apprenticeships are set to be created in Leeds alone.
  • A brand new depot. Originally planned to be housed in Crofton, the HS2 rolling stock depot is set to be placed in Leeds – creating 125 skilled new jobs and ensuring Yorkshire plays a crucial role in the delivery of HS2.
  • Preservation. With the development of any major infrastructure project comes obvious challenges within ensuring it has a minimum impact to the environment. HS2 Ltd have recently announced a Green-Corridor between Birmingham and Crewe with funding to ensure thousands of trees and numerous habitats are created and protected on the route. Leeds have already received confirmation that Nostell Priory and its surrounding parkland will be preserved due to the new depot locations – meaning the historic building will be around for generations to come.
  • Connectivity in Yorkshire. HS2 isn’t just about the connectivity to London. The Department for Transport say a brand new line will mean faster and better journeys for passengers right across the region.
  • Travel to London quicker. HS2 will transform the journey time to London from 2hrs and 11mins to just 1hr 21mins.

It’s confirmation from the Department for Transport of some of the things we know already. There are huge opportunities for economic growth in Leeds through the arrival of HS2.
