Newcastle University is seeking a principal development partner for a multi-million-pound mixed use scheme located on a 29-acre brown-field former hospital site in Newcastle City Centre.

The development, known as the Campus for Ageing and Vitality (CAV), will be the first of its kind within the UK, drawing together all aspects of healthy ageing innovation, research, and development in one location.

The University and their partners, including Newcastle City Council and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH), are keen to bring on board a development partner that will support their vision for this community led scheme, resulting in a development that provides innovative solutions for multi-generational living, leisure, learning and employment.

Following their appointment early last year, national architecture practice, GSSArchitecture, have been driving the development forward, carrying out key stakeholder engagement sessions and virtual consultations which have provided local community groups, ward councillors and interested parties the ability to view and submit their feedback on early-stage designs and proposals. This has resulted in a high-level site masterplan being submitted for outline planning permission in March 2021.

This site represents a fantastic opportunity for Newcastle to grow its already significant, national reputation as a centre for excellence in ageing, innovation, and digital science. By supporting a truly integrated community, focused on the principles of Health, Wealth and Wellbeing, the CAV development will provide social and economic foundations to enable true environmental sustainability.
