Penwortham Mills Trafford

Plans have been submitted to develop 330 new homes and a Lidl Supermarket in South Ribble.

Trafford Housing Trust – who’re speaking at the Greater Manchester Economic Growth and Development Conference – are behind the plans to redevelop the former Penwortham Mills site.

The masterplan has been submitted by AFL Architects on behalf of the applicant, who were advised by Savills, and it’ll see the development take place over three phases. The site has been the focus of new housing for a number of years – just over three years ago Bovis Homes secured approval for 385 new homes which saw the forced closure of a pub. The homes will range from one to four bedroom in a mixture of tenure options. [emaillocker id=”71749″]

There will also be 8.5-acres of public open space and affordable homes as part of the scheme, with Trafford Housing Trust will also work alongside South Ribble Borough Council to provide homes for the later life living sector.

Fred Crawshaw, Senior Commercial Manager at Trafford Housing Trust, said: “The plans include the delivery of new public open space and upgraded footpath links to the nearby reservoir, which through new trees, shrub planting and retention ponds will deliver an ecological enhancement and improvement in biodiversity far better than the existing use of the land. By submitting a planning application residents and local businesses can have their say on the development, which we are confident will be welcomed in and around Penwortham. If we get planning permission we intend to be on site in the summer.”

Matt Quayle, Senior Associate at AFL Architects said: “There is an enormous opportunity to create a thriving community on this site, through attractive placemaking, ecological enhancements and accessibility, and real affordable housing.”

Stuart Jardine, Regional Head of Property at Lidl, added: “If granted permission, this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area. We’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and feedback so far and look forward to receiving the decision in due course.”

The new store will generate 40 new jobs.
