Concept designs have been revealed to showcase how Smithfield Market could look after the historic market moves to Dagenham Dock in East London.

Designed by Studio Egret West the images reveal how entertainment spaces will be created, alongside new food and cultural spaces all to be built inside the walls of the existing Grade II listed buildings. Part of the floor of the Grand Avenue is also set to be ‘cut’ and removed to connect the building above with the basement levels below, creating a sequence of spaces descending out to the rotunda. All season gardens are also planned.

Plans were submitted earlier this year by the City of London Corporation – who’re speaking at the Thames Estuary Development Plans Event to discuss the project. [emaillocker id=”71749″]

Studio Egret West’s Founding Director David West said: “Smithfield Market constitutes a collection of unique spaces, above and below ground. Our approach is to enhance what is there, to celebrate the multilayered, metropolitan character of the place and to release its full potential through a series of unlocking moves. We envisage a demand for year-round public realm and airy “inside-outside” spaces, especially in the aftermath of Covid-19. Smithfield can provide a plethora of flexible creative, cultural and commercial spaces for the public to enjoy.”
