Waterman joins leading organisations in the environmental services sector in committing to actively address the climate emergency through their business activities.

Waterman is delighted to have joined the Pledge To Net Zero initiative which recently partnered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Race to Zero campaign to rally fast climate action from business, cities, regions, investors and universities ahead of COP26.

Signalling our commitment to actively address the climate emergency, we will join other leading organisations in setting science-based targets to tackle greenhouse gas emissions within our company.

The Pledge to Net Zero has been established by the environmental services sector with the goal of making the sector a leader for taking action on climate change.

As a Pledge signatory, Waterman will:

  • Set and commit to delivering a greenhouse gas target in line with either a 1.5°C (encouraged) or well below 2°C climate change scenario – covering buildings and travel as a minimum.
  • Publicly report greenhouse gas emissions and progress against this target each year.
  • Publish minimum one piece of research/thought-leadership each year on practical steps to delivering an economy in line with climate science and in support of net zero carbon, or mentor and support for smaller signatory companies in setting targets, reporting and meeting the requirements of the pledge.

Dr Emma Wilcox, Chief Executive at the Society for the Environment, said: “If we are to achieve net zero by 2050, we need organisations to show leadership by turning ambition into tangible, science-based action driven by the expertise of their environmental professionals. “It’s therefore brilliant to see leading organisations like Waterman Group showcasing how they are playing their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially as we near the hugely important COP26 summit.”

Waterman’s COO of Infrastructure & Environment, Neil Humphrey, said: “We are at a major turning point in the UK’s history, and I believe that the Pledge to Net Zero is a critical component to sector leadership and collaboration which will help secure a net zero society for generations to come. As we address the climate emergency and plot a course to net zero for the built environment, the Pledge will become a cornerstone for Waterman’s sustainability strategy underpinning our own business operations.”
