Plans to redevelop a former Ski Village in the South Yorkshire city of Sheffield have moved forward – as Extreme Destinations and Sheffield City Council sign an agreement for the project, with Extreme signing a 150-year lease.

The ski village, which has remained derelict since it was destroyed by a fire in 2012, is set to undergo a major transformation, turning into a world-class ski facility alongside a thriving sports, leisure and entertainment destination which is expected to attract more than 1m visitors a year and boost the economy to the tune of £40m. The agreement between Extreme Destinations (who’re set to share exclusive intel on the scheme at the South Yorkshire Development Conference) and Sheffield Council will allow the developer to go ahead with its investment proposals – and they’re now set to work on drawing up a full planning application with work likely to begin in 2020. The council have also received secured almost £5m of infrastructure funding to build a new access road through to the site.

The £60m redevelopment will include:

  • A new ski slope
  • Mountain biking trails
  • Central hub building with shops, bars and restaurants
  • Visitor accommodation

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment for Sheffield City Council, said: “We believe that Extreme Destinations share our vision for this site to be the jewel in the crown of Sheffield’s Outdoor City Strategy. They have engaged with local stakeholders and the international sports market and this agreement for lease is supported by both the council and developer. It gives us the reassurance we need as an authority to make decisions that are best for the people of Sheffield, but also gives the developer assurance that it can proceed to a full business plan and planning permission and move the project forward.”
