York Train Station Revitalised Council Plans Approved

The City of York Council have approved plans which will revitalise and upgrade the front of York Train Station to create an improved gateway into the city for those visiting via rail. The plans will help transform the area surrounding the historic station – creating pedestrian friendly public spaces, an improved setting for the City Walls and a more integrated area to transition easier between all forms of public transport.

It’s another exciting development within the city, with the York Central project set to transform the city with a regeneration of one of the largest city centre brownfield sites in the UK just one of the other schemes being brought forward, all which will be discussed at the York Development Plans Event in January.

The masterplan for the York Station upgrade proposes:

  • Bus and taxi uses closer to the station entrance
  • Parking access through one-way loop road
  • Long term parking areas combined into a multi-storey car park leading to…
  • Disposal city centre land leading to further development
  • New public space below the City Wall arches

Cllr Keith Aspden, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Economic Development and Community Engagement, said: ”I’m pleased that so many people got involved during the consultation and that now, those comments have been worked into the approved Masterplan. By listening to residents, businesses and visitors to the city, we have developed an ambitious masterplan with the aim of providing a fitting gateway to our historic city. Combined with the York Central development, we can transform this part of the city to the benefit of the residents and visitors who use the station, whilst improving its connection to the rest of the UK.”
