College University York Residential Accommodation Student Expansion Masterplan Growth Liz Gatheral

Two new colleges proposed by the University of York are set to be approved by the council – which will also provide 1,421 new beds. The new buildings are set to be developed next to the existing University estate – on derelict land in the middle of Goodricke Lane and Baird Lane.

Documents previously submitted by the University of York, who’re set to speak about their estate plans at the York Development Plans event in January, said about the scheme: ”The two groups of student residential buildings are organised as colleges – North and South. Both college are planned around a centrally located hub, which forms the social heart and functions as a ‘front door’ to the college. The layouts for both colleges are based on courtyard forms.”

The higher education institution have overseen a mast amount of development over the last 18 years – with twenty buildings being created on their Campus West site and their first phase developments at the Campus East site. The new development, which feeds into their ongoing expansion plans, includes:

  • North College – Including 730 rooms
  • South College – Including 691 room
  • 30% of South College rooms to be ‘premium’
  • Focus on socialising with a large open area between buildings

The University added: ”The proposed student residential development and associated social hubs on Campus East forms an important part of the University of York’s masterplan as it will further establish this as a university campus – in line with our other investments in this location. The new student residences are needed to meet both growing student numbers and improving the overall quality of accommodation stock that we are able to offer.”
