Gateshead Arena Exhibition Conference Centre

An incredibly ambitious project in the North East has gained the support of the Department for International Trade as part of £2bn of new investment opportunities launched across the UK. The £250m scheme, set for Gateshead Quay, will see a 3.84 hectare site transformed into a thriving new area which will drive tourism and visitors to the region.

Gateshead Council, who’re set to speak about the scheme at our North East Development Plans Event, are behind the plans as they work alongside Ask Real Estate. The project is set to create:

  • Exhibition and conference centre
  • State-of-the-art 12,500 entertainment arena
  • Bars
  • Restaurants
  • Extensive public realm

The North East is currently lacking high-quality conference facilities – and this will be a first for the region, allowing them to attract new visitors and host major conferences and exhibitions alongside music and cultural events. In terms of numbers the scheme could:

  • Support 1,140 jobs
  • Attract 300,000 visitors a year
  • Regional economy boosted by £30m+ each year

Impressive images have been released by architects HOK which show the development being connected to the Gateshead town centre to ensure easy assess and strong connectivity – enabling it to act as a catalyst for growth in the areas around the proposed scheme.

Cllr Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council and speaker at our North East Event in January, said: “Gateshead Quayside speaks for itself but there are still things to be done. What would you put between Norman Foster’s Sage Gateshead, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge? It needs to be as innovative and striking as the suite of visionary waterfront developments that have went before so together with our development partners and architects HOK, we have come up with this. It is one of the most exciting development opportunities in the UK today I think it’s absolutely the right thing to do in this location. This is a gamechanger not just for Gateshead but for the region.”
