Airports and Airport Cities Future Development Plans

Monday, 7th June 2021 0945hrs – 1130hrs

On this webinar we’ll uncover new insights and future plans from those at the forefront of future airports and airport cities, whilst hearing about new opportunities and how airport cities and employment hubs will feed into and integrate into the growth plans of the surrounding cities.

The trending theme will also be how airports will recover and fightback from the effects of the pandemic and how they are adapting to climate change restrictions as the UK looks to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

We’ll hear from influential figures in the airport’s sector and delve into the phenomenal opportunities which airport cities present, whilst gathering insights into best practice and the ingredients that make an airport city viable. We’ll also hear discussions and presentations from airport owners and operators alongside key stakeholders to hear how airport cities can knit into already existing cities, what infrastructure is needed to unlock growth, and what major developments are planned.

Speakers for this event include:

  • MAG East Midlands Airport – Geoff will join the session to speak about the recently announced freeport status given to East Midlands Airport. The move is seen as the biggest game-changer in a generation for the East Midlands’ economy, with the potential to add £2bn to the region and create 60,000 jobs. The 1,300-acre freeport will provide businesses with tax incentives and reduced regulation to create jobs and develop property, attracting global investors, speeding up the supply of goods and accelerating growth. The freeport status will encourage major investment among the region’s main manufacturers, including Rolls-Royce, Bombardier, Toyota and Caterpillar and Geoff will expand on how this move will make the airport a global gateway for UK plc
  • Highlands and Islands Airports Limited – (HIAL) are creating the UK’s first operationally-based, low-carbon aviation test centre in Scotland. It will be based at Kirkwall Airport in the Orkney Islands and is part of the SATE (Sustainable Aviation Test Environment) project, which aims to identify the next generation of air services, together with the operational airport infrastructure necessary to support sustainable aviation. The £3.7m project is part-funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. Kimberley will join the session to discuss this project and how it will drive future development at the airport. As the Project Manager for SATE at Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), David will discuss how the UK’s first operationally-based, low-carbon aviation test centre project will aid the development of sustainable aviation and how this fits into a low carbon future.
  • Gloucestershire Airport – Karen Taylor has been named as the managing director of Gloucestershire Airport Ltd after three months in the role in an interim capacity having previously been commercial finance director at the airport for two years. Karen will talk about the long-term vision for the airport, including the programme of work now underway to deliver significant improvements at the airport – including refurbishment of two runways and installation of new radar comms as well as the delivery of the new CGX Connect Business Park development which will provide approximately 323,000 sq. ft of new commercial and industrial floor space and has potential to create up to 1,520 new employment opportunities.
