Rob Thompson, Director of Estates; Coventry UniversityCoventry Development Plans - Rob Thompson

Rob Thompson started his career as a graduate Quantity Surveyor in 1988 with Birmingham City Council. He progressed through the ranks to become a Senior and then Principal Quantity Surveyor with his role expanding to encompass project management and organisational development responsibilities. Whilst at Birmingham Rob achieved chartered status in 1991 and completed a masters degree and MBA before leaving in 2000 to take up the role of Assistant Director of Estates (Contracts) at Coventry University.

Rob has been Director of Estates at Coventry since 2008, responsible for leading the team that delivered high profile projects such as the Student Hub and the Engineering & Computing buildings as part of the £200m redevelopment of the campus.  During that time he has also overseen considerable restructuring and development of facilities management at the University. Rob is proud of the contribution that his team have made to Coventry’s progress over recent years leading to it being named the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2014, Modern University of the year.


James Breckon, Director of Estates; University of WarwickJames Breckon Resized

James Breckon joined the University as Director of Estates in October 2014.

James is an experienced leader and professional engineer with a significant track record in the design and build of facilities for academic, research and development organisations. His experience also includes the delivery of major capital and change projects in the charitable, private and public sectors. In his previous role as a Director for Balfour Beatty at Heathrow Airport, he was responsible for the design and delivery of the £300M capital programme across terminals 1, 2 and 4. Previously to this, James worked as Business Unit Director at design and project management organisation Parsons Brinckerhoff, and as Operations Director at AMEC and Morgan Ashurst.

Under James’ leadership, the Estates Office is responsible for the effective management of the University’s land, buildings and holdings. This includes management of the University’s capital programme, asset management and key maintenance and service projects in line with the University Estates Strategy.
