East West Rail – Driving Economic Growth

This event will focus on the East West Rail project connecting Oxford and Cambridge – delving into the stations, infrastructure and the economic opportunities this creates around towns and cities within the catchment area.

A new rail link between Oxford and Cambridge has been mooted since the mid-90s, and as part of the plans for the ‘UKs Silicon Valley’ it is one of the most high profile infrastructure projects in the UK today. The Department for Transport recently announced £760 million of new funding to progress the Bicester to Bletchley section – a project that will create an estimated 1,500 jobs during the estimated 4 years required to complete the section as well as the construction of a new station at Winslow. We will learn how the landmark scheme will improve connectivity across the Arc, support jobs and unlock a “once in a generation” economic opportunity.

With the second phase of the scheme well under way and the final stage being planned we will learn how £3.4 billion final stage will progress, the major economic benefits it will bring and where there are opportunities to get involved.
  • Oxford to Cambridge Arc Leaders Group – Describing the delivery of the East West Rail scheme as the most fundamentally important objective to create economic growth in the Arc, Bev represents all the local authorities and LEPs which cover the region. As part of this session he will detail what his conglomerate of organisations are doing to support the project and how the wider private sector can underpin ambitions.
  • South East Midlands LEP – As one of the key stakeholders in rebuilding the regional economy in a post-Covid world, SEMLEP’s mission is to build on the South East Midlands reputation as a premier location for growth, innovation, creativity and world-leading technologies, which will result in a doubling of the area’s GVA by 2050. East West Rail is key to unlocking their ambition and Hilary joins the session to talk about how her team are contributing to the development of the project.
