Newcastle University – Iain Garfield, Director of Estates & Facilities

At the beginning of 2020, Newcastle University purchased a large parcel of land from Newcastle General Hospital and harbour ambitions to work in partnership with the NHS and other community stakeholders to further develop their ‘Campus for Ageing and Vitality’. Proposals include a mixed use development encompassing 29 acres incorporating elderly care, a research zone and space for housing and business. As part of the event, Iain will update the audience on timelines for the project  while also covering other estates related matters at the institution.

Hot off the heels of the release of BCU’s strategic plan, John will be joining the conference to talk about how estate development factors into their key indicators for success. With ambition to be more globally attractive to students, John is being tasked with ensuring the campus evolves and is maintained to a high level and will be going into detail on future property projects.

One of the UK’s most trusted student accommodation providers with over 885,000 students currently occupying their rooms, Unite play a prominent part in a plethora of university towns and cities across the country. With major projects in the pipeline totalling £250m, such as the 600 bed tower in Manchester, the 300 bed Abbey Lane site in Edinburgh, Nick will be on hand to talk about the role his organisation play in place creation and student retention while also giving insight on how the education sector can move on from a tough 2020.

Rejuvenation, refurbishment and renewal are all key themes that Kings College have set their campus development strategy behind and with projects such as Block 9 and the redevelopment of the Prideaux Building on the way, alongside the wider Strand Campus scheme    there is a lot to be excited about at the institution. Peter will be on hand to divulge the estates team’s thinking behind the project, their ongoing affiliation with Guys and St Thomas Hospital and what might be in store for the future.

With five major projects of a diverse nature in the pipeline, it is a busy time for the University of Nottingham’s estates team as they seek to maintain the institution’s global reputation by providing an outstanding campus. Spanning the proposed East Midlands Conference Centre refurbishment, the Sutton Bonnington North Lab Redevelopment, the University Park Centre for Biosciences expansion, Jubilee Campus Accommodation project and the state of the art PEM Centre, Linda will be talking about the reasoning behind their plans, how the current economic and public health climate has impacted her thinking and what the future of her estate looks like.
