Flood Risk & Future Defence Developments

Friday, 25th June 2021 1345hrs – 1530hrs

Water-based natural disasters effect over 5 million Britons every year.

More than 300,000 homes are protected from the effects of flooding compared to 2015. With government’s £5.2 billion flood and coastal defence programme from last year’s budget set to start in April this year, this webinar offers a great opportunity to open the discussion between a range of experts to share thought leadership and insight into innovations within the flood defence sector.

From coastal defences to sustainable drainage systems, we’ll look to explore new technologies to make our communities safer.

Speakers include:

  • Flood Innovation Centre – Whether it’s an existing product of an entirely new method of flood resilience, the Flood Innovation Centre aims to support businesses by offering a range of tailor-made Innovation Support Packages. Located in the Humber, the centre brings together industry experts, high-level academic research and cutting-edge technology to enable businesses to evolve their way of operating and to help our communities become better prepared for rising flood risks
  • APPG for Flood Prevention Rachael Maskell is the Member of Parliament for York Central and the Shadow Minister for Charities. She has also served as Shadow Defence Minister and as the Shadow Rail Minister; also serving in the Shadow Cabinet as the Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment and as the Secretary of State for Employment Rights. Rachael is an MP who works hard for her constituents and is currently the Chair of the APPG for Flood Prevention.
  • Environment Agency – Whilst the Environment Agency specialises in a range of sectors from sustainable development to wildlife preservation, increasing the resilience of people, property and businesses from the risks of water-based natural disasters remains a high priority for the organisation. Between 2015 and March of this year (2021), the Environment Agency and partners have overseen an investment of over £2.6 billion in flood and coastal defences, completing more than 700 projects to protect 300,000 homes, approximately 600,000 acres of agricultural land, as well as thousands of businesses and major pieces of infrastructure.
