Greater Manchester Economic Growth Conference 2018 | Event

The inaugural Greater Manchester Economic Growth Conference brought together the region’s most senior private and public-sector leaders to discuss the key business themes, hear about the major developments and regenerations projects set to take place and collaborate as an industry to maximise the huge economic growth potential which Greater Manchester holds. Our incredible panels and speakers presented about their ongoing development plans, revealing exclusive insights and future schemes set to take place across Greater Manchester and how we can work together to ensure success.

The conference will saw:

  • 350+ Delegates.
  • 35+ VIP Speakers.
  • 25+ Exhibitors.

We kicked the conference off by hearing about the key regional topics within the economic conversation – with senior figures from Manchester United FC and the University of Manchester amongst those delivering keynote speeches. They helped set the scene for the rest of the conversation throughout the day as they discussed the general performance of the region, discussed the key topics and constraints within the region and aligned the audience to help deliver the vision and future aims of Greater Manchester. We were then joined by Greater Manchester Combined Authority and leaders from private and public sector organisations to get the conversation rolling about the industrial strategy in the region and how, through a focus on certain areas we can boost the economy and maximise opportunities. Some of those who were involved included:

  • Collette Roche; Chief Operating Officer at Manchester United FC
  • Rishi Shori; Leader of Bury Metropolitan Borough Council
  • Eamonn Boylan; Chief Executive of Greater Manchester Combined Authority
  • Mike Blackburn; Leader of Greater Manchester LEP
  • Jessica Bowles; Director of Strategy at Bruntwood / Manchester Science Park

Once the scene had been set and the discussions on key areas of focus had taken place we then set about finding out what projects link into the economic growth agenda for Greater Manchester. Over 15 private sector developers/investors and several key public sector authorities and organisations delivered a presentation – followed by Q&A – on the incredible schemes which are both ongoing or proposed for the future which will drive the creation of jobs, homes, opportunities and growth. From major new commercial schemes to innovative developments we saw presentations focused on three key areas; Major Development Plans, Major Infrastructure Plans and Major Residential Plans. Some of the presentations were:

  • CEG have some major projects planned for the region including a 22-storey development in the heart of Manchester opposite the Arndale Centre.
  • U+I are behind the exciting Mayfield development which will see a high quality urban neighbourhood being created. They’re breathing new life into the 24-acre derelict site, formerly a railway station. The £1.1bn mixed-use community scheme will create over 10,000 jobs, 6.5-acres of public park within the City Centre, over 1,350 new homes and much more!
  • Manchester Airport are looking to grab the opportunities of the Northern Powerhouse discussion and the investment interest in Greater Manchester and the arrival of HS2 to the Airport will be an additional catalyst for growth.
  • Bruntwood are leading the charge in Greater Manchester – they’re involved in some exciting developments including Circle Square, Didsbury Technology Park and Manchester Science Corridor.

Alongside the presentations we broke off for separate panel discussions on key topics. Alongside the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, who inputted into the agenda, we provided a fantastic line-up and agenda to focus on some of the key topics that Greater Manchester has set as priority areas. We discussed Education & Skills alongside Place Based Integrated Working to tackle current issues and align the audience on how Greater Manchester is both tackling these areas and also what their vision is for the future. We then followed this up with a conference ending Q&A session led by the audience – with the panel helping to summarise and align the audience. Some of those involved included:

  • Prof Helen Marshall; Vice-Chancellor at University of Salford
  • Sean Fielding; Leader of Oldham Council
  • Joanne Roney; Chief Executive of Manchester City Council
  • Craig Gaskell; Chief Executive & Principal of University Academy 92
  • Jon Lenney; Director at NHS Greater Manchester
